GoDaddy girlGoDaddy went down yesterday taking an untold number of websites and email accounts down with it.  Whether true or not (another member of Anonymous said it was not their doing), a member of Anonymous claimed responsibility.  Sites went down at 1:25 PM EDT and remained offline until 5:43 PM EDT.

I’m taking godaddy down bacause (sic) well i’d like to test how the cyber security is safe and for more reasons that i can not talk now

The attack appeared to be a DNS attack so it would have affected sites hosted elsewhere that used GoDaddy’s DNS servers.  Sites remained down for several hours.  GoDaddy hosts millions of personal and business accounts and has been attacked earlier in 2012 when it voiced its support for the SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) bill.

One business owner who hosts his site on GoDaddy told the New York Times:

I’m definitely one for upsetting the establishment in some cases, and I understand that if he’s going after GoDaddy, he may have had many reasons for doing that.  But I don’t think he realized that he was affecting so many small businesses, and not just a major company.
