Sony Bravia 4K Ultra High Definition Televison (TV)With all the hype over 3D television dying and the HDTV free-for-all all but dead, the Consumer Electronics Association has made the move to ensure the next “big thing” prods customers to empty their pockets for the latest and greatest television experience. Meet “Ultra High Definition” television, the successor to HDTV. The criteria required to qualify as a UHDTV unit include eight million active pixels, an aspect ratio of 16:9, and a resolution of 3,840 x 2160 (HDTV res is 1,920 x 1,080). UHDTVs must also have at least one digital input capable of delivering the new 4K format video without upconverting the signal.

Experts say for anything below 80 inches, the new Ultra High Def TVs aren’t really going to matter.  We say – “get the hell out of our way”.  The more pixels, the closer we can stick our faces to the set in order to try and distinguish artifacts and individual people’s faces in the crowd.  The first 84 inch models from Sony and LG are priced between $20,000 and $25,000. It will be several years before prices dip to levels the average consumer is willing to pay but we can still hang around Best Buy and gawk.
