A new land speed record for a robot was set this month and it’s official, robots can now run master than men.  The cheetah inspired robot was developed by U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).  We shudder to think what purpose a super fast running robot could be for the United States Defense Department (they claim it’s to walk alongside humans offering assistance but we already have Big Dog for that).  If you fear not being able to outrun a robot, your fears are now well founded.

With some tweaks to the software, the cheetah bot hit a top speed of 28.3 mph.  Right now it relies on a tether to keep it upright but an untethered version (called Wildcat) is scheduled to be tested next  year.

Here’s a video of the creepy robot sprinting on a treadmill.
