Here come the Hellraiser reviews.

Hellraiser is a reinvigorated reboot that gets the blood pumping, starting with Jamie Clayton’s worthy Pinhead performance that sets a fresh tone with immense reverence paid to Clive Barker’s works.

IGN

It’s perfectly entertaining, using Barker’s inventive tropes to tell a solidly gory nightmare, but it’s a pale vanilla shadow of the original.

IndieWire

The new 2022 Hellraiser does some cool stuff when it reaches the back stretch, although the two-hour-long film spends way too long spinning its wheels to get there. It won’t tear your soul apart, but at least it’s a drop of fresh blood for a series that didn’t deserve to stay dead.

CNET

Hellraiser was in bad shape, and what Bruckner has done here is lift the series out of the gutter to give it a touch of old-school charm. But I know he can do better, and I just wish this revival was more of an icky, gooey success rather than a moderately okay horror pic.

Sense8 and The L Word: Generation Q actress Jamie Clayton has been named as the new Pinhead and Clive Barker (who created the original film based on his 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart) and Marc Toberoff have joined the project as producer. Grand Army’s Odessa A’zion will star.

Producer Clive Barker said,

“Having seen some of the designs from David Bruckner’s new Hellraiser film, they pay homage to what the first film created, but then take it to places it’s never been before. This is a Hellraiser on a scale that I simply didn’t expect. David and his team are steeped in the story’s mythology, but what excites me is their desire to honor the original even as they revolutionize it for a new generation.”

A new Hellraiser film is in the works with David Bruckner (The Night House) at the helm. August 11, 2021

SFX Magazine reported today that a new Hellraiser movie on the way, with The Night House director David Bruckner at the helm. Bruckerner however, was understandably tight-lipped.

“We can’t say anything about it yet…But it is something that we are actively working towards, and it is a joy and a dream for a filmmaker like myself to dive into that world.”

But Bruckner followed with an interesting tidbit.

“All I’ll say is that we are aiming to be as true as we can to the original material. The Hellbound Heart is also a primary source of inspiration, as well as the original film. But then it is something of a small reimagining.”

The Hellbound Heart is Clive Barker’s novel that the movie is based on. A reimaging that is closer to the original source sounds like a winner.

While Bruckner’s Hellraiser is a movie headed to Hulu, HBO is developing their own separate Hellraiser project – a TV series that will feature a pilot directed by David Gordon Green (Halloween). Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat) and Mark Verheiden are on board as writers. Original author Clive Barker will serve as an executive producer.
