Iron Sky, a comic science fiction action film, was released to Finland, Germany, and other European countries in April 2012 and well-received by a huge online fan base. Production for the film began in 2006 and was produced with an online community of film buffs in a new participatory method of movie making that allowed the online community to contribute to the film’s plot and dialog. Did the online community assist in making a great flick? As of June, 2012, Rotten Tomatoes’ users have given it a 6.4 out of 10. Not bad, but not great either. Iron Sky has a huge online fan base though, and its release to DVD is highly anticipated (and the official trailer (see below) looks pretty good too).
Iron Sky will be released to DVD on October 2, 2012. The DVD will also include a Making Of Featurette, Behind-the-Scenes Footage, Teasers and Theatrical Trailer, and Audio Commentary with Director and Producer.
Here’s the official synopsis:
In the last moments of World War II, a secret Nazi space program evaded destruction by fleeing to the Dark Side of the Moon. During the following 70 years of utter secrecy, the Nazis constructed a gigantic space fortress with a massive armada of flying saucers. Their plan: travel back to Earth and re-colonize the planet. And in the not-too-distant future, mankind’s greatest enemy is no longer history as the Reich strikes back in this eagerly-anticipated worldwide box office phenomenon which has enjoyed a U.S. theatrical release in over 75 markets, and makes its Blu-ray and DVD debut this October from Entertainment One.
When American astronaut James Washington (Christopher Kirby) puts down his Lunar Lander a bit too close to the secret Nazi base, the Moon Führer (Udo Kier) decides the glorious moment of retaking the Earth has arrived sooner than expected. Washington claims the mission is just a publicity stunt for the President of the United States (Stephanie Paul), but what else could the man be but a scout for the imminent attack by Earth forces? The Fourth Reich must act, so two Nazi officers, ruthless Klaus Adler (Götz Otto) and idealistic Renate Richter (Julia Dietze), travel to Earth to prepare the invasion. In the end when the Moon Nazi UFO armada darkens the skies, ready to strike at the unprepared Earth, every man, woman and nation alike, must re-evaluate their priorities.
