About the Avatar: The Way of Water (Avatar 2) movie.

Avatar 2 (aka James Cameron’s Avatar 2) is directed by James Cameron and produced by 20th Century Studios. It is the second film in Cameron’s Avatar franchise, following Avatar (2009). Cameron is producing the film with Jon Landau, with Josh Friedman originally announced as Cameron’s co-writer; it was later announced that Cameron, Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno took a part in the writing process of all sequels before being attributed separate scripts.

The film is set over a decade after the events of the first film, but will revisit the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their children) as they continue to fight to stay alive, keep their people safe, and figure out a way to overcome the tragedies they experience.

Cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald are all reprising their roles from the original film, with Sigourney Weaver returning in a different role. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, and CJ Jones.

Cameron, who had stated in 2006 that he would like to make sequels to Avatar if it were successful, announced the first two sequels in 2010 following the widespread success of the first film, with Avatar 2 aiming for a 2014 release. However, the subsequent addition of three more sequels, and the necessity to develop new technology in order to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, pre-production, and visual effects. The film has been subject to 8 delays to its theatrical release, with the latest occurring on July 23, 2020.

Avatar 2 is planned for a release on December 16, 2022, with the following three sequels to be released, respectively, on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028.

Preliminary shooting for the film started in Manhattan Beach, California on August 15, 2017, followed by principal photography simultaneously with Avatar 3 in New Zealand on September 25, 2017; filming concluded in late September 2020, after over three years of shooting.

James Cameron says he threw out the Avatar 2 script after a year of work writing it. September 23, 2022

“I wrote an entire script for the sequel, read it and realized that it did not get to level three. Boom. Start over. That took a year.”

It’s a tough challenge – trying to create a follow-up to one of the greatest movies of all time – and James Cameron knows it. He has revealed that a full screenplay for Avatar 2 was tossed out because he wasn’t happy with it, despite it taking a year to write. According to Cameron, he could not continue the script until he fully understood why the first movie did so well (ahem, the visuals).

What did Cameron conclude?

“Well, all films work on different levels. The first is surface, which is character, problem and resolution. The second is thematic. What is the movie trying to say? But Avatar also works on a third level, the subconscious.”

Which is just another way of saying “the visuals”.

Producer Jon Landau introduces “Spider”, a new character that will be adopted by Jake and Neytiri. January 4, 2021

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Avatar 2 producer Jon Landau introduced audiences to a new character named Miles Socorro, aka Spider. The character will be the adopted son of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). But because Spider was born on a military base for the forces that were trying to harvest Pandora’s resources, he creates tension between Jake and Neytiri. As Landau explained it to Empire:

“Jake took him in, but Neytiri always saw him as one of those people who destroyed her home and killed her father. So you have all these dynamics playing out.”

James Cameron reveals that eventually, the Avatar storyline will take place on Earth. December 21, 2021

In a recent interview, director James Cameron discussed how Avatar was (and wasn’t) similar to Dune. During the discussion, he popped a surprise revelation – the Avatar storyline will ultimately cross over to Earth.

“Well, it was a challenging decision because I either wanted to do it right, or just not even do it. I just made this – I guess, strange – decision that everything that I needed to say artistically about the things that were important to me, I could say within the framework of the universe that I knew it could be. Just like Dune takes place across worlds, the later Avatar’s take place across…certainly across two worlds, because some of it takes place on Earth as the story evolves, and different biomes within.”

Avatar 2’s underwater theme requires unique skills from the actors. December 15, 2021

James Cameron said the actors for Avatar 2 had to go through special training to learn how to act underwater. Training included scuba certifications and how to hold your breath for a long time. It’s been reported that Sigourney Weaver learned to hold her breath for six-and-a-half minutes while Kate Winslet could hold hers for 7 1/2-minutes. Jon Landau said:

“One of my favorite memories was we had this circular tank, maybe 40 feet wide, with a big glass portal in it. I walked by one day and I see Kate Winslet walking on the bottom of the tank … She’s walking towards me and sees me in the window, and she just waves, gets to the end of the wall, turns around, and walks all the way back.”

Producer Jan Landau confirm rumors that plot will center around Jake and Neytiri. December 14, 2021

Details are still scarce regarding the plotline for Avatar 2 (other than the film will have an underwater theme) but new comments by Jan Landau confirm rumors that the plot would center on new parents Jake and Neytiri.

“I think the story of Avatar 2, and the strength of the story, is what Jim [Cameron] always does in any of his movies: he writes in universal themes that are bigger than any one genre. And if you think about this, there’s really no more universal theme than family. At the center of each of our sequels is the Sully family. What are the dynamics that parents go through to protect their family?”

Landau also released the following concept art that will appear in an upcoming EW story.

Simon Franglen brought aboard to score all the forthcoming Avatar sequels. August 31, 2021

James Horner’s final Oscar nomination, before passing away in 2015, came as the composer of the original Avatar. Today franchise producer Lon Landau announced that Simon Franglen will take over the job. Franglen worked on the team with James Horner that scored the first movie, including writing the music for the songs sung by Na’Vi.

Stephen Lang (Colonel Quaritch) tells EW that his filming for Avatar 2 and 3 is complete.

Lang tells EW that, while the possibility of him needing to return to pick some small details exists, he has otherwise completed the next two Avatar films. The actor says…

“I was in communication just last week with New Zealand, with my director, and everything’s great — he’s working hard. My acting work on both Avatar 2 and 3 is complete. I might have to go back and do a line here and there, but I’m really done.”

Stephen Lang reveals the script for the upcoming Avatar sequels was so moving, he wept. (August 9, 2021)

Director James Cameron has already revealed that Don’t Breathe star Stephen Lang would be the villain in all four Avatar sequels. In a recent interview, Lang was asked about his reaction to reading the scripts for the upcoming sequels.

“When I finished the last script, I was weeping. I just thought it was so beautiful. He’s telling a great, great story, an original story, a beautiful, beautiful story, and I was just incredibly moved by it. I hope and I trust and believe that audiences will be, too, because one of the things that he does really, really well is he moves it from the page to the stage in a way that that is very literal. You know what I mean? You really see it. What you read is what you get from him, I think, and more.”

The stunning behind-the-scenes set photos from Avatar 2 set high hopes that the sequel will regain highest grossing movie of all time record.

Last summer, Avengers: Endgame stole Avatar‘s record as the highest grossing movie of all-time, barely beating the James Cameron-directed 2009 movie, $2.797B to $2.79B. But after seeing all the stunning set photos from filming, hopes are high that Avatar 2 can regain the record.

Avatar 2 is set several years after Avatar.

“At the center of each of our four movies will be the Sully family. Each sequel will play as a standalone movie. Each movie’s story will come to its own conclusion… However, when looked at as a whole, the journey across all four movies will create an even larger connected epic saga for audiences around the world.”

Jon Landau described the approach to the Avatar sequels.

“As we’ve moved on with the sequels to Avatar we made a very conscious decision to stage the whole four sequels on Pandora. We don’t need to go to another world if we want water, we’re going to go to the oceans of Pandora.

”It’s a continuation of the same characters, but what happen when warriors that are willing to go on suicide charges, and leap off cliffs on to the back of big orange toruks, what happens when they grow up and have their own kids? It becomes a very different story. Now the kids are the risk-takers and the change-makers. So, it’s interesting, but it makes sense to me. Everybody’s either a parent, or they had parents at the very least, and if you look at the big successful franchises now, they’re pretty much uninterested in that.”

There will be lots of new scenery too.

“We’re going to go to totally different environments, we’re going to meet different cultures. Just like our planet is as diverse culturally as we are environmentally. We want to introduce people to different cultures. In the first movie, we only met the Omaticaya clan, and they are the clan here allowing us to come to the Valley of Mo’ara. But as we venture out we’re going to different environments and different clans.”

Avatar 2 is directed by James Cameron with Jon Landau. Filming began on August 15, 2017 at Manhattan Beach, California but moved to New Zealand during the coronavirus pandemic. Filming concluded in September 2020 after over three years of filming. The Avatar sequels star Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, and Matt Gerald. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Vin Diesel, Jemaine Clement, and Oona Chaplin.
