You just thought the terror had ended – Dexter is returning to Showtime next Fall for 10-episode limited series.

Showtime Dexter (Michael C. Hall) face wrapped in plastic

Our suspicions have been proven correct. Showtime has announced that the premium cable outlet has ordered a 10-episode limited series Dexter reunion. Michael C. Hall will return as the conflicted serial killer and Clyde Phillips will remain the showrunner. It was suspected (hoped) the series would return after Phillips signed an overall deal with Showtime and CBS Television Studios earlier this year.

The show will continue where the eight-season series left off – Dexter living as a self-imposed exile, working as a lumberjack (hey, at least he still gets to cut things up) in a remote Pacific northeast location.

Showtime Entertainment president Gary Levine told the Hollywood Reporter:

“Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago. We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world.”

Clyde Phillips earned three Emmy nominations for best drama series for the show. Michael C. Hall received five straight lead acting Emmy nods for his portrayal of Dexter and won Golden Globe and SAG Awards for the role.

Production on the new Dexter limited series will begin in 2021 in time for a Fall 2021 premiere.
