Introduction to Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Sandberg revealed at DC FanDome 2020 that the title is Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The film had been scheduled for release on April 1, 2022 and was supposed to start filming in Summer 2022, but was pushed back to November 4, 2022 due to COVID-19 and then eventually to 2023.

Shazam Fury of the Gods is produced by New Line Cinema, DC Films, The Safran Company, and Mad Ghost Productions, and set for distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is intended to be the sequel to Shazam! (2019). It is directed by David F. Sandberg from a screenplay by Henry Gayden. The cast is slated as follows:

  • Zachary Levi as Shazam
  • Asher Angel as young Billy Batson
  • Jack Dylan Grazer as Frederick “Freddy” Freeman:
  • Djimon Hounsou as Shazam: The ancient wizard who gave Billy his powers after naming him as champion.
  • Rachel Zegler
  • Helen Mirren as Hespera: A daughter of Atlas.
  • Lucy Liu as Kalypso: A daughter of Atlas.

Principal photography began on May 26, 2021 in Atlanta, Georgia, with Gyula Pados serving as cinematographer. Filming concluded on August 31, 2021.

“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quick.”

Zachary Levi says Shazam! Fury of the Gods is even better than the first movie. December 2, 2021

In an interview, lead actor Zachary Levi got into why he believes Shazam! Fury of the Gods is even better than the first Shazam.

“I will say that I genuinely — and this is not just lip service — I’m really proud of the first one, I think we made a really, really good movie. I think the second one is better. I think that we had more time, we had more budget. We had, essentially, the entire cast returning, and we all knew our characters a little bit more; we could kind of sit into them a little bit more. Henry Gayden, who wrote the first script, wrote the second, and he did a fantastic job doing so. Everything just clicked even a little bit more and a little bit more. And also the kids have grown up a little bit more, so even the sensibilities of them become even slightly more mature which brings it closer to my or other people’s adult minds, so there’s even more connection there, I think. The action’s great, the comedy’s great, the relationships are great. The bad guys, Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, are fantastic. I’m very proud of it. I want it to come out sooner than June of 2023.”

New set photos reveal Djimon Hounsou’s Wizard is returning. (July 26, 2021)

Yeah, we thought he was gone too but new photos from the set of Shazam! Fury of the Gods show Djimon Hounsou’s Wizard, the same guy that gave Bill his powers, is back.

The Wizard has been an integral figure in DC Comics’ Shazam mythos since the very beginning. And here’s a potential hint at his role: The Wizard also died in the comics but his spirit lived on and would advise Billy from the Rock of Eternity.

Director David F. Sandberg released a promo image today of Grace Fulton as Mary Marvel (Lady Shazam). The image is a clear play on the old WWII war posters (July 16, 2021).

Mary Marvel (Mary Batson/Mary Bromfield) is a teenage member of the Marvel/Shazam Family of heroes and the older twin sister of Billy Batson. Like her brother, Mary has been granted the power of the wizard Shazam. Mary Bromfield and Lady Shazam both made their cinematic debut in the DC Extended Universe film Shazam!, played by Grace Fulton and Michelle Borth, respectively.

First look at Helen Mirren as the villainous character Hespera (June 23, 2021)

Leaked photos give us our first look at Helen Mirren as Hespera. The character is probably unfamiliar to Shazam readers. Hespera is the daughter of Atlas.

Here is 75-year-old Helen Mirren fully suited up in stunning bronze armor designed by Louise Mingenbach. How refreshing to see an elder actress play a villain!
