The Marvels movie is based on Marvel Comics featuring the characters Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is intended to be the sequel to Captain Marvel (2019), a continuation of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel (2021), and the 31st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The Marvels film is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman) from a screenplay by Megan McDonnell, and stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel. British actress Zawe Ashton is set to play the antagonist of the film. Samuel L. Jackson returns as Nick Fury.

Marvel Studios confirmed plans to make a sequel to Captain Marvel in July 2019, and development began in January 2020 with McDonnell joining and Larson set to return. DaCosta was hired that August, with Vellani and Parris revealed to be cast in December. Pre-production work began in February 2021 and second unit filming began in mid-April 2021 in New Jersey (under the working title Goat Rodeo), with The Marvels revealed as the title in early May. Principal photography began in Los Angeles, New Jersey, and at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, in late May 2021 with post-production following on February 9, 2022.

The Marvels swaps release dates with Ant-Man 3, moving from February to July. April 27, 2022

Disney has announced a shake-up in the release order of Phase Four for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the release date of The Marvels, the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, is being pushed back to July 28, 2023. Ant-Man 3, previously dated for July 28, 2023, now goes four months earlier on February 17.

The Marvels has remained relatively quiet, despite having wrapped up filming and heading into post-production. After all, the film is not expected in theaters until 2023. Brie Larson (Carol Danvers) changed that today when she took to Twitter to remind us that the sequel to Captain Marvel, The Marvels, has less than a year before it hits theaters. Via Twitter, she posted “See you in a year, Carol” accompanied by a picture of Larson’s set chair that has her character’s name, Carol Danvers, written across the back. Disney delays opening date for The Marvels. October 18, 2021

Disney announced today, that the release of The Marvels will be delayed due to production delays. The release date was moved from November 11, 2022 to February 17, 2023.

Photos from the set of The Marvels captured Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau) and director Nia DaCosta eating in London with a surprise guest – Lashana Lynch. Lashana Lynch played the role of Maria Rambeau, the mother of Teyonah Parris’ Monica in the original Captain Marvel film.

Lashana Lynch’s presence is somewhat unexpected given that in WandaVision, we learned that Maria, who went on to help found S.W.O.R.D., had passed away from cancer.

Captain Marvel star Brie Larson confirms that filming for The Marvels has begun. August 11, 2021

It has been believed that The Marvels would start filming in April. Today on Sirius XM, Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson confirmed that filming is now underway in London.

“It’s pretty surreal when you’re doing films like this, they’re unlike anything else: huge sets, huge amount of people on set, a lot of specialist specialty things. It’s a really unique experience. “I’m a huge fan of Disneyland, so to me it feels like I get to go to my own private Disneyland every single day, because they’re building all these insane worlds that no-one else knows about, no-one else gets to see. I’m in sets that are bigger than you can imagine right now and it’s really special, and it’s super fun and bizarre.”

New names appear on The Marvels IMDb page. August 11, 2021

The IMDb page for The Marvels has been updated with a few notable new names. Samantha Jackson, credited as being the assistant for Shamier Anderson, recently starred in Netflix’s Stowaway and is currently set to appear in John Wick: Chapter 4. Thom Jones is listed on the IMDb page as being the dialect coach for actress Lashana Lynch, who played Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel. Finally, the third and most notable new name is John Humber, who worked as an assistant to Jude Law on Captain Marvel… and is currently credited as returning in the same capacity on The Marvels as well.

So what do these additions really mean? Lashana Lynch reprising her role as Maria Rambeau is easy enough. Jude Law returning as Yon-Rogg, the commander of the Kree Empire, opens up a realm of possibilities.

Keen eyes spotted Teyonah Parris in London as the principal cast is gearing up for the bulk of production. Not much is known about The Marvels plot but… Parris played Monica Rambeau in the Disney+ series, WandaVision.
