Texans indeed do know how to go big. Located in a remote section of west Texas, Xtreme Power and Duke Energy have switched on the world’s largest battery, a battery capable of delivering a whopping 36 megawatts of electricity over the grid in a little over 15 minutes. According to New Scientist:
“The battery’s job is to act as a buffer, smoothing out the supply of electricity from the 153 MW Notrees wind farm nearby. The intermittent nature of wind power means fossil fuel powered turbines often have to step in to match energy supply with demand.”
In addition to increasing the supply of renewable energy during periods of peak demand, the battery system will help stabilize the frequency of electricity traveling throughout the power grid. Duke Energy is working closely with the Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which signals to the battery storage system to either dispatch stored energy to increase frequency or absorb energy to decrease frequency.
