Contact lensAccording to the Telegraph, Ghent University’s center of microsystems technology has developed a spherical curved LCD display which can be embedded in contact lenses and handle projected images using wireless technology.  The technology allows the entire surface of the contact lens to be used for the display giving the wearer a true heads-up display (HUD).

“Normally, flexible displays using liquid crystal cells are not designed to be formed into a new shape, especially not a spherical one. By using new kinds of conductive polymers and integrating them into a smooth spherical cell, we were able to fabricate a new LCD-based contact lens display.”

The research group is beginning to work on real-life applications for the technology, such as heads-up display of text messages or GPS navigation instructions,  and says that the lenses could be available in as little as a few years.  Researchers explained that the new technology could also be used to adjust the amount of incoming light reaching the eye, similar to sunglasses, and even allow the user to tune the color of their eyes dependent upon their mood.
