image thumb1031Researchers at Symantec antivirus have examined data from over 11 million PCs and correlating the malware signatures to public reports of the zero-day exploits that the malware exploited, they found that the average time a zero-day exploit was held secret was over 10 months. In some cases the unknown exploit did not become known to security vendors for up to 2 ½ years. The findings also lead researchers to calculate that up to 50% of zero-day exploits are still unknown.
