Meet the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV)–set to replace the Humvee currently used by U.S. military

The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) pictured above is the United States military truck set to replace the Humvee currently used by the U.S. Army and U.S. Marines.  The Oshkosh was selected on August 25, 2015 and awarded a $6.75 billion contract for 16,901 vehicles to be delivered sometime around 2018 (although we all know they are already being tested on the battleground *somewhere*).

The JLTV’s doors are jam-resistant even after the vehicle has taken damaged and includes an automatic fire extinguishing system.  It contains a hi-tech diagnostic monitoring system and of course, the capacity to carry various kinds of ammunition.  The JLTV features an adaptable suspension that can be raised and lowered to respond to terrain requirements and was designed to reach speeds 70 percent faster than the M-ATV, while providing a superior ride to the occupants.  Unlike the Humvee, the JLTV is made to survive in hostile environments including roadside bombs, ambushes, and other unusual threats.

The services plan to buy nearly 55,000 of the vehicles, including 49,100 for the Army and 5,500 for the Marine Corps.  Each vehicle is expected to cost $399,000 (optional equipment not included).
