Google has launched Field Trip, a location-based app that is “your guide to the cool, hidden, and unique things in the world around you.” Set up Field Trip with your areas of interest (e.g. architecture, historic places, lifestyle, obscure places of interest, food and drink, movie locations, offers and deals), and Field Trip will run in the background searching several sources for points of interest near your current location. When an interesting item is found, Field Trip will pop a card showing you details on the area and announce it out loud. If you don’t want to hear the announcements, the application’s extensive configuration options let you tune it out.  You can upvote or downvote items that are served to you which helps tune the navigation engine.

Great app for geeks that like trivia stuff.  Field Trip was developed by NianticLabs, a Google Labs group inside of Google. Sources for data include publications like Songkick, Flavorpill, Database of Historical Markers, Thrillist, Food Network, Eater, Cool Hunting, Arcadia and Google’s own Zagat, a local interest search company that Google acquired last year.  Available for Android only right now but an iOS version is in the works.

Below is a product marketing video that is pretty touching. Make sure you have tissues on hand (or maybe I’m just a big baby).
