Subaru EVs Take Over Europe as Gas Models Exit by the End of 2027

Subaru is putting a firm deadline on its European transformation: gasoline-powered vehicles will disappear from the brand’s lineup by the end of 2027, with battery-electric models taking over from 2028. The shift will begin sooner than that, as Subaru’s European gas-car phaseout starts with the Outback leaving the market at the end of 2026.

The remaining combustion-powered range is scheduled to follow in 2027. That group includes the Impreza, Crosstrek, and Forester, all of which currently use Subaru’s 2.0-liter mild-hybrid Boxer powertrain. Once those models are gone, European customers will be offered three electric vehicles: the Solterra, the compact Uncharted, and the larger E-Outback.

Subaru has already laid the groundwork for that trio. In a 2025 announcement, Subaru Europe introduced all three as battery-electric vehicles built on its updated e-Subaru Global Platform. The company says the platform brings larger batteries, stronger motors, faster charging, greater towing capacity, and a software-managed version of its signature all-wheel-drive system.

The Solterra is the most established name in the group, serving as Subaru’s first electric SUV. The refreshed version is rated at 252 kW, offers more than 500 kilometers of claimed range, and can tow up to 1.5 tons, according to the automaker. The Uncharted broadens Subaru’s reach into the compact-SUV market with both all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive versions, while the E-Outback carries the familiar wagon-inspired name into the electric era with 210 millimeters of ground clearance, dual X-MODE, and symmetrical all-wheel drive.

This strategy also reflects Subaru’s unusually narrow position in Europe. The company sells far fewer vehicles there than in its home market or North America, and its European leadership has indicated that developing a plug-in hybrid path would be difficult to justify at that scale. Instead, Subaru is moving directly toward battery power while trying to preserve the traits that define the brand: all-wheel-drive traction, outdoor capability, safety, and a low center of gravity.

For existing Subaru fans, the change means the familiar Boxer-powered lineup has a limited runway in Europe, but the electric replacement is not being presented as a simple urban commuter range. Subaru is betting that updated EV hardware can reproduce the practical, snow-ready, trail-friendly character associated with the Forester and Outback. The first major test will come as the new models reach dealers through 2026, ahead of the gasoline cutoff that turns the European lineup fully electric in 2028.
