A Rhizome is a continuously growing, thick, fleshy, horizontal underground stem which puts out lateral shoots and roots at intervals. Some may turn upward and exit the ground to form a daughter plant. A Rhizome differs from a stolon in that a stolon remains chiefly above ground and is typically thinner and longer. Rhizomes are also called creeping rootstalks or just rootstalks.
