Guild Wars 2 has already been hacked

Guild Wars 2 game screenshotChinese hackers have launched a dedicated attack against Guild Wars 2 ArenaNet servers in a successful attempt to obtain private player information.  According to Guild Wars:

Hackers have lists of email addresses and passwords stolen from other games and web sites, and collected through spyware, and are systematically testing Guild Wars 2 looking for matching accounts.

Guild Wars 2 was released just two weeks ago.  The hacks follow last weeks controversial banning of 3,000 players for using bugs in the Guild Wars 2 game to their benefit.

It is estimate that up to 11,000 accounts have been compromised.  Guild Wars has been disabling certain account and game features in an effort to stem the attacks but they are also blaming users for the success of the hacking attacks and subsequent breaching of player’s accounts.  It is believed that the attackers are using player information stolen from other accounts (and presumably other companies?) to test the login of the player on the Guild Wars 2 servers.  Guild Wars is recommending that all users change their passwords immediately.  Guild Wars has not addressed why there is no protection in place for brute force attacks such as this nor why they are unable to implement brute force attack protection to stop the attacks.
