Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced the global launch of its next-generation virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR2, which promises high-fidelity visuals, new sensory features, and enhanced tracking, taking virtual reality gaming to a new level.
PlayStation VR2 takes advantage of innovations in the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console, with new sensory features that amplify sensations of in-game actions, enabling a greater sense of presence for players. The headset is accompanied by the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller, which has haptic feedback and adaptive triggers to allow players to feel and interact with games viscerally. The PS VR2 Sense controller can detect the approximate location of fingers and enable more natural gestures during gameplay.
The headset feedback is another sensory feature that amplifies in-game sensations. Created by a single built-in motor with vibrations, this intelligent tactile element enhances the immersive experience. Players can feel a character’s pulse racing during tense moments, the rush of objects passing close to the character’s head, or the thrust of a vehicle as the character speeds forward.
Eye tracking is another innovation in the PS VR2, which detects the motion of the player’s eyes, allowing them to interact more intuitively and in new and lifelike ways. With 3D audio and foveated rendering, the PS VR2 provides a high-fidelity visual experience with an OLED display offering a 4K HDR video format, 90Hz/120Hz frame rates, and a 110-degree field of view.
Designed for comfort, the PS VR2 headset is slightly lighter than the first PlayStation VR headset, and an integrated vent provides extra airflow while playing. It also features a lens adjustment dial to optimize players’ view. With inside-out tracking, the PS VR2 tracks the player and controller through integrated cameras embedded in the VR headset, so the player’s movements and direction are reflected in-game without needing an external camera. The PS VR2 is also easy to set up, with a single cable connected directly to the PS5, allowing players to jump into the VR experience immediately.
PlayStation VR2 will launch alongside a diverse portfolio of games from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners, including Horizon Call of the Mountain, Gran Turismo 7, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge Enhanced Edition, and Resident Evil Village. Beyond the initial launch, additional titles set to launch for PlayStation VR2 include The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners Chapter 2: Retribution, Creed Rise to Glory: Undisputed Edition, Tetris Effect, Firewall Ultra, and more.
Jim Ryan, President, and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment said, “Providing extraordinary experiences to gamers is what we strive for at PlayStation, and today we are thrilled to start this new chapter in virtual reality gaming with PlayStation VR2. PlayStation VR2’s innovative technology has helped unlock the creativity of the industry’s finest developers, who have designed outstanding games that deliver a greater sense of presence for players. I can’t wait for fans around the world to experience PlayStation VR2 for themselves.”
