About the Guardians of the Galaxy films and beloved characters

The Guardians of the Galaxy were relatively unknown to even the most dedicated Marvel fans before their 2014 feature film debut. However, with two solo films, two appearances in Avengers movies, a cameo in Thor: Love and Thunder, and a holiday special under their belt, they have become beloved characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Guardians of the Galaxy films are beloved for their humor and emotional depth. However, all good things must come to an end. Writer/director James Gunn confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be his last Guardians film and the conclusion of this iteration of the team. Before they disappear forever, here is a complete role call of all the characters and creatures that appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – their profiles, backstories, and unusual facts about our MCU favs!

About Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The third film in James Gunn’s lauded MCU series sees the return of the Guardians, along with the arrival of Adam Warlock – previously teased in the first two films – in a full starring role with the burgeoning team of outlaws turned galactic saviors. In Marvel Studios “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Guardians of the Galaxy Character Guide – the complete guide to all the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 characters

Adam Warlock (Will Poulter)

will poulter adam warlock guardians of the galaxy 3

Fans are excited for the arrival of Adam Warlock, a new character in the Guardians trilogy. He will be played by Will Poulter, who is known for his role in Midsommar.

Warlock, a character from comics, shares many similarities with Vision from Guardians of the Galaxy. Both characters were artificially created and possess incredible abilities like super-strength and flight, just like Superman. Additionally, Warlock, like Vision, has a connection to the Infinity Stones, which he uses in the comics, but it’s unlikely he will use them in the films since the Infinity Saga has ended and the stones have been destroyed. In the comics, Warlock is a well-known team member who starts off as an adversary to the Guardians before eventually joining forces with them to defeat the true villain of the film.

Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki)

1dee23fa8e5b4a7a147e6039a409c443b4f44e13 1111x574 1

In Volume 3, Yesha (played by Elizabeth Debicki) will reveal her plan for revenge. She is the High Priestess among the Sovereign, a race of aliens who believe they are the ultimate life forms. The Guardians angered her when Rocket stole some valuable Anulax Batteries, leading the entire Sovereign fleet to chase after them. Despite the chase, the Guardians won, and it is unclear what happened to Yesha.

In the end, the Guardians won, but Ayesha wasted her people’s resources. Now, she’s gone mad and is facing punishment from the Sovereign council. At the end of the movie, Ayesha shows her latest creation, a powerful life form that she calls Adam.

Beardy Ravager (Elan Gale)

Behemoth (Reinaldo Faberlle)

Behemoth is a member of the Deviant race, a group of genetically unstable beings who are the enemies of the Eternals. Behemoth is known for his incredible strength and durability and has made several appearances throughout Marvel comics, often as a member of the villainous group known as the Deviants.

In terms of his powers, Behemoth possesses immense strength, allowing him to lift and move incredibly heavy objects with ease. He is also extremely durable, able to withstand attacks from even the most powerful of foes. Additionally, Behemoth has the ability to generate powerful energy blasts from his hands, which he can use to devastating effect in battle.

Blurp (Dee Bradley Baker)

guardians of the galaxy vol 3 blurp

James Gunn himself explained Blurp the best. ““Blurp begins as a pet of one of the Ravagers in the movie. He carries him around. And if you want some lore? Well, his species goes right back to the first Guardians film. Blurp is what’s known as a furry F’saki. In the very first movie, if you remember, there was that Orloni table that they were betting on, with that beast that was eating the animals. The bigger thing was eating the smaller things. That thing was a non-furry F’saki. Blurp is a furry F’saki. So that’s what he is. He’s a pet.”

Bretelsnort (Benjamin Byron Davis)

Bretelsnort is an employee at OrgoCorp who was manipulated by Mantis to fall in love with Drax the Destroyer.

Broker (Christopher Fairbank)

Broker

Broker’s cameo might be more than just an Easter egg from the first film. Broker’s appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 revealed not every citizen of Xander died during Thanos’ attack when the Mad Titan stole the Power Stone.

Bzermikitokolok (Rhett Miller)

Bzermikitokolok

You might remember Bzermikitokolok from The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special where the lead singer and guitarist performed original Christmas songs.

Carrot Head (Jonathan Fritschi)

Controller (Counter-Earth) (Natalia Safran)

Cosmo the Spacedog (Maria Bakalova)

maria bakalova cosmo guardians of the galaxy 3

In the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Cosmo the Spacedog was one of the many creatures held captive in the Collector’s vast collection. Cosmo likely escaped when the collection was destroyed, but they didn’t speak during the film. In the comics, Cosmo is a talkative Russian cosmonaut dog who gains psychic powers after being sent into space. Cosmo is a loyal ally to the Guardians and adds cuteness to the movies due to being a particularly powerful being.

Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista)

dave bautista drax guardians of the galaxy 3

Although Drax may appear to fit the stereotype of a brawny individual, he also has a compassionate side that comes from the tragic loss of his family at the hands of Thanos. While he may not be the quickest to understand things, he brings a sense of humor to the team, even if it is unintentional due to his inability to detect sarcasm and tendency to take everything literally.

Drax lost his original family, but he found a new one with the Guardians team. He cares deeply for this group of misfits and is willing to risk his life for them. In The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Drax’s dedication to making his best friend Peter happy shows how much he loves this lovable crew of rebels.

Eagly

Fitz-Gibbonok (Gerardo Davila)

Floor the Rabbit (Mikaela Hoover)

mikaela hoover floor guardians of the galaxy 3

Gamora/Cosmic Time Heist (Zoe Saldana)

zoe saldana gamora guardians of the galaxy 3

Gamora, along with her adopted siblings, was abducted from their home planets by Thanos and raised to be his loyal “children” and lieutenants. She learned of Thanos’ pursuit of the Infinity Stones and knew she had to stop him and betray him at all costs. After teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy and reconciling with her estranged sister, Nebula, Gamora developed a romantic relationship with the self-proclaimed Star-Lord. Unfortunately, her story ends tragically when Thanos kills her to obtain the Soul Stone, as she was his favorite daughter. If you watched Avengers: Infinity War but missed Endgame, you might be wondering how Zoe Saldaña’s character, Gamora, is back in green makeup.

Gamora’s story doesn’t end there. In Endgame, the Avengers’ time travel caught the attention of a different Thanos and an alternate version of Gamora. They entered the main Marvel Universe, where Gamora changed her mind and fought against her father with the heroes.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gamora has taken on a significant role as a member of Stakar Ogord’s (Sylvester Stallone) Ravagers in this unfamiliar timeline. She seems confused and uneasy about Peter Quill’s character.

Gloob

Groot (Van Diesel)

vin diesel groot guardians of the galaxy 3

Groot is the opposite of his irate furry friend. Though he uses force occasionally, he is a gentle and kind-hearted creature. Vin Diesel’s character has few lines to deliver since he only utters “I,” “am,” and “Groot,” and Rocket is the only one who can comprehend his unique language. Nevertheless, Groot proves to be a selfless and compassionate giant who sacrificed his life to save his buddies during a fight with Ronan (Lee Pace). Rocket managed to recreate his woody friend using a single branch from the battle, giving rise to a charming Baby Groot. In Avengers: Infinity War, Groot has now grown into a moody teenager raised by several parental figures.

In Volume 3, it appears that Groot has undergone a significant growth spurt. He has become much larger and is no longer the small, fragile twig he was before. It is possible that Groot is currently going through a bodybuilding phase, which is common for individuals around college age.

Gurb

High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji)

chukwudi iwuji high evolutionary guardians of the galaxy 3

Marvel’s latest villain, the High Evolutionary, is determined to create the ultimate being. He enhances existing people and creatures as part of his quest for perfection. However, he’s never satisfied with his creations and will go to extreme lengths, sometimes even torturing and mutilating millions of lifeforms. Unlike the Sovereign, who believe they’ve already achieved perfection, the High Evolutionary’s quest has been ongoing for so long that he once used a young Rocket as one of his test subjects.

Howard the Duck (Seth Green)

Howard the Duck

Howard the Duck is a fictional character in the Marvel universe. He first appeared in Adventure into Fear #19 in 1973. Howard is a humanoid duck who comes from another dimension. He was created by writer Steve Gerber and artist Val Mayerik.

Howard is known for his sarcastic and sardonic wit, as well as his love of cigars and his fedora hat. He has appeared in various comic book series, including his own self-titled series, as well as in animated television shows and a feature film.

Jason Quill

He is the father of Peter Quill, who is better known as the superhero Star-Lord. Jason Quill was a NASA astronaut who discovered an alien race called the Spartax during a mission in space. He fell in love with the princess of the Spartax, and they had a child together, Peter Quill.

In the comics, Jason Quill is portrayed as a heroic figure who sacrificed his life to protect his family from an alien threat. His legacy lives on through his son, who he inspired to become a hero and join the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Karja (Nathan Fillion)

Nathan Fillion Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

Kraglin Obfonteri (Sean Gunn)

sean gunn kraglin guardians of the galaxy 3

Sean Gunn played Kraglin in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Initially, James Gunn included his brother as a clever way to include him in the films. However, Kraglin’s character evolved from a goofy side character to a beloved member of the guardians’ family. Kraglin was Yondu’s second in command during their time with the Ravagers. Although he lacked intelligence, his unwavering loyalty to Yondu made up for it. Kraglin, like the rest of the team, was devastated by Yondu’s heroic sacrifice. As a tribute to his fallen leader, Kraglin affixed Yondu’s signature fin, the source of his powerful and lethal arrow, to his head. In an end credits scene of Vol. 2, we see him attempting to wield the unique weapon, but it’s clear that he needs more practice.

In Volume 3, Kraglin is having difficulty learning how to use Yondu’s arrow while also managing the team’s new base on Knowhere.

Krugarr (Jared Gore)

Krugarr

Krugarr is a character in the Marvel universe who is a sorcerer and a member of the mystical race known as the Lem. He is also known as the Keeper of the Tower of the Timeless Ones. Krugarr possesses immense magical abilities, which he uses to defend the universe against supernatural threats.

Krugarr first appeared in Marvel Premiere #1 in 1972 and was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane. He has since appeared in various Marvel comic books, including Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Krugarr was a former student of the Ancient One and is a member of the Vishanti, a trio of powerful mystical entities. He is also a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, a group of intergalactic heroes who protect the universe from threats.

Krugarr’s powers include telepathy, teleportation, astral projection, energy manipulation, and magical spellcasting. He is also able to manipulate time and space, making him a formidable opponent.

Kwol (Administrator Kwol) (Jennifer Holland)

jennifer holland peacemaker

Kwol is a fictional character who appears in the Marvel Comics universe. He is a member of the Hand, a criminal organization of ninja assassins. Kwol is depicted as a skilled martial artist and assassin, with enhanced strength, speed, and agility.

Kwol first appeared in Daredevil #292, published in 1991. He was created by writer Ann Nocenti and artist John Romita Jr.

In the comics, Kwol is often portrayed as a loyal follower of the Hand’s leader, the villainous ninja known as the Beast. However, he has also been shown to have a sense of honor and loyalty to his fellow Hand members.

Kwol has appeared in various comic book storylines, including those featuring Daredevil, Wolverine, and Elektra. He has also made appearances in video games, such as Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.

Lambshank (James Gunn)

Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3 4

Latti (Sarah Anne Li)

Lylla Otter (Linda Cardellini)

linda cardellini lyla guardians of the galaxy 3

Rocket and Lylla have had a long-standing relationship in the comics. Both were ordinary animals who were given consciousness and subjected to cruel experiments. They reconnect at different points in the comics, often drawing on their shared history as enhanced mammals. It is unclear whether Lylla managed to avoid capture like Rocket, or if she became one of the many casualties of the High Evolutionary’s schemes.

Mainframe (Tara Strong)

Mainframe

Mainframe is a fictional character in the Marvel Universe. He is a superhero and a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Mainframe is an artificial intelligence created by the techno-organic race known as the Phalanx. He was originally designed as a weapon, but he rebelled against his creators and joined forces with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Mainframe has a vast array of powers and abilities, including superhuman strength, speed, and durability. He is also capable of flight and has the ability to interface with technology.

In the Guardians of the Galaxy comics, Mainframe is often depicted as the team’s computer expert and strategist. He is also a loyal and dependable ally to his fellow Guardians.

Mantis (Pom Klementieff)

pom klementieff mantis guardians of the galaxy 3

Mantis, a new member of the team, displays similarities with Drax. Both show a certain level of naivety and lack social skills.

Mantis was raised by Ego, who used her exceptional empathic abilities to help him calm down. This was a difficult job for the mighty god, who is a living planet. Mantis may have been able to ignore Ego’s desire to reshape the galaxy to his liking because of their close bond. However, she eventually recognized Ego’s wrongdoing and is now an essential member of the Guardians team. Despite Drax frequently mocking her appearance, Mantis has earned the love and respect of her team.

In The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Mantis becomes the main character and tries to plan the best Christmas celebration for her brother, Peter. This is her chance to show off her skills and be in the spotlight.

Martinex (Michael Rosenbaum)

Martinex TNaga

Martinex is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics Universe. He is a member of the superhero team known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. Martinex is an alien from the planet Pluto who possesses the ability to generate and manipulate heat and cold. He is also a skilled engineer and is often responsible for maintaining the team’s technology. Martinex has been a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy since their formation and has played a key role in many of their adventures.

Molly Ravager (Molly Quinn)

Nebula (Karen Gillan)

karen gillan nebula guardians of the galaxy 3

Karen Gillan’s Nebula began as a notorious villain, but underwent years of torture and cybernetic alterations by her father, Thanos. She could never match the skills of her sister, Gamora, which led to a bitter rivalry. Nebula dedicated herself to surpassing her sister and ultimately killing her. After some time, Gamora helped Nebula realize that all her pain stemmed from Thanos and not her. Nebula eventually forgave her sister, aided the Avengers in reversing Thanos’s snap, and even became a full-fledged member of the team. Although the other Guardians face their own moral dilemmas, Nebula’s journey was particularly challenging.

Nebula is currently the strict mom of the group, often scolding the team when they act immature. Although she may have some rough edges, she has formed a strong bond with Rocket. In fact, she even gave him Bucky’s (Sebastian Stan) arm as a Christmas gift.

Neelie (Darla Delgado)

Orloni Peddler (Giovannie Cruz)

Phlektik (Peter Davidson)

Phyla (Kai Zen)

Phyla-Vell is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. She first appeared in Captain Marvel (vol. 5) #16 and was created by writer Peter David and artist Paul Azaceta.

Phyla is the daughter of Mar-Vell and Elysius, and the younger sister of Genis-Vell. She inherited some of her father’s powers, including superhuman strength, speed, and durability. She also possesses the Quantum Bands, a pair of wristbands that give her control over quantum energy, allowing her to fly, create energy constructs, and teleport.

Phyla has been a member of various superhero teams, including the Guardians of the Galaxy, the United Front, and the Annihilators. She has also been known by several different superhero names, including Quasar, Martyr, and Captain Marvel.

Recorder Vim (Mirriam Shor) and Recorder Theel (Nico Santos)

Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper)

Bradley Cooper Rocket Guardians of the Galaxy 3

Rocket and his loyal companion, Groot, worked as bounty hunters, tracking down targets throughout the galaxy. It was during this time that they met Peter Quill. However, a series of events threatened to destroy the galaxy, and so they teamed up with other “jackasses standing in a circle” to form the Guardians of the Galaxy. In Vol. 2, Rocket’s stubbornness causes a rift between himself and the rest of the team as he also takes care of a new form of Groot – a baby. Yet, an unlikely alliance with Yondu teaches Rocket the importance of family and valuing those around him despite past mistakes.

Volume 3 includes flashbacks of Rocket’s early life as a regular baby raccoon and his transformation into an advanced creature by the villainous High Evolutionary. The film also features Rocket’s interactions with Lylla Otter, his longtime romantic interest from the comics, who is making her debut in the MCU. Linda Cardellini portrays Lylla Otter.

Ssssaralami (Sarah Alami)

Stakar Ogord (Sylvester Stallone)

Sylvester Stallone, an icon of eighties action movies, portrayed Stakar Ogord, a respected Ravager captain in The Suicide Squad, prior to his role as King Shark. Yondu, like Kraglin, greatly admired Stakar. In the comics, Stakar, also known as Starhawk, mentored Yondu when he was a young slave and taught him their practices. However, when Yondu broke their code and kidnapped a child from Earth, Stakar disowned his former student.

Yondu redeemed himself by performing heroic deeds alongside the Guardians, which inspired Stakar to reunite with old friends. In a post-credits scene for Vol. 2, Stakar creates his own team, consisting of his first mate Martinex (Michael Rosenbaum), his wife Aleta Ogord (Michelle Yeoh), and old friends such as Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames), Mainframe (Miley Cyrus), and Krugar. Stallone reprises his role as Stalkar in Vol. 3, taking Gamora under his wing, while Martinex and Mainframe also make a comeback (with Tara Strong replacing Cyrus).

Star-Lord / Peter Quill (Chris Pratt)

chris pratt star lord guardians of the galaxy 3

Chris Pratt’s portrayal of the Marvel character is known for humor, but his storyline is tragic. We first meet Peter Quill as a child dealing with the death of his terminally ill mother. He is taken by the Ravagers, a group of aliens led by Yondu (Michael Rooker), who becomes a father figure to him. As he grows up, Peter becomes a spacefaring rogue with a heart of gold, often referencing the music from his Sony Walkman, which is one of his few remaining possessions from home. He befriends a group of outcasts, including a talking raccoon, an alien tree, a berserker, and the beautiful daughter of the Mad Titan, whom he falls for instantly.

Peter and his newly-found family, now called the Guardians of the Galaxy, went on thrilling adventures across the galaxy. They eventually met Ego (Kurt Russell), who claimed to be Peter’s father. However, Ego was actually a wicked Celestial who wanted to use Peter to rule the galaxy and revealed that he was responsible for Peter’s mother’s death. Despite the difficulties they encountered, Peter and his friends were able to defeat Ego. But, it came at a cost: Yondu gave his life to save Peter, his adopted son.

Peter was deeply affected by the loss of his dear Gamora during the infamous Infinity War. She tragically met her end at the hands of her adoptive father, Thanos (Josh Brolin). Peter’s agony led to his inadvertent contribution to Thanos’ acquisition of the remaining Infinity Stones, which resulted in the disappearance of half the universe into dust. Although he returned in Avengers: Endgame, the pain of losing Gamora still lingered within him. Upon learning of the existence of a Gamora from an alternate timeline somewhere in the cosmos, Peter became determined to find her.

Peter has been significantly impacted by his experiences with the Avengers, particularly the death of his loved one. He is currently dealing with depression, but his friends are able to cheer him up during The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special by bringing Christmas to him. Mantis reveals that she and Peter are siblings, which makes Peter feel less isolated in the galaxy.

Teefs (Asim Chaudhry)

Teefs line in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was classic: “I think my name shall be “Teefs”, because while we all do have them, mine are definitely the most prominent.” Teefs the walrus was one of the test subjects selected by the High Evolutionary for his experiments in creating a perfect society. On the planet of Counter-Earth, the walrus was modified into a cyborg, with wheels implanted into his sides, miniature hydraulics on his eyelids to facilitate blinking, and various other circuitry and wires.

Ura (Daniela Melchior)

James Gunn brought Ura over from the DC Universe. She is a member of the Green Lantern Corps, a group of intergalactic peacekeepers who use the power of their rings to protect the universe from threats.

Michael Rooker by Gage Skidmore 2

Yondu Udonta first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 in January of 1969. Yondu is a member of the Ravagers, an interstellar group of thieves, smugglers, and pirates. He is known for his distinctive red fin and use of a magical arrow that he controls through whistling.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Yondu is portrayed by actor Michael Rooker. He first appeared in the film “Guardians of the Galaxy” in 2014, and later in the sequel “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” in 2017. In the films, Yondu is a father figure to Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord. He sacrifices himself to save Peter in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” cementing his role as a hero in the Marvel Universe.

Bonus: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Post-Credit End Scenes explained

The credits Easter Egg

The credits have a hidden message for comic enthusiasts, mentioning the youngest new member as Phyla. In the Marvel Comics universe, Phyla-Vell is part of a group of space explorers with ties to the first Captain Marvel, a Kree fighter named Mar-Vell. It’s not clear if this new addition to the MCU means that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has introduced a completely new Marvel superhero, as Phyla-Vell’s comic book origins are not tied to the High Evolutionary or the Guardians of the Galaxy. Wait and see!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Post-Credit End Scene 1

As the new team enjoys a relaxed conversation, they spot a pack of fierce creatures charging towards them in the distance. Kraglin believes he can defeat them all with his arrows, but that would spoil the group’s fun. Just before they charge into battle, Rocket pulls out his Zune and plays “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone – the iconic song from the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy that symbolizes a fresh start for the series.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Post-Credit End Scene 2

After the main action in the movie, the post-credits scene may appear less thrilling, but it ends with Marvel’s trademark “Will Return” message, hinting that a certain confident space rogue will be back. The scene portrays Peter having a peaceful chat with his grandfather, whom he hasn’t met for years, about normal human topics. The only noteworthy detail is the newspaper that Grandpa Quill is reading, which features a headline that states “Alien Abduction: Kevin Bacon Tells All,” a nod to The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’s plot in which Pete’s favorite actor is kidnapped by Drax and Mantis.

x1080 2

As the film reaches its climax and fades to white, a title appears, reading “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return”. This could be a hint that Peter Quill will soon star in his own standalone film or it may suggest that he will make a comeback in one of the forthcoming Avengers movies.
