Alien: Romulus secures top spot in opening weekend with impressive $41.5 million haul.

20th Century Studios’ film Alien: Romulus, which is the most recent installment in the famous Alien franchise, secured the top spot with an impressive $41.5 million opening at the domestic box office this weekend, surpassing industry expectations. This marks the second biggest domestic opening in the current Alien series and the largest opening in director Fede Alvarez’s career. The movie, starring Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, also achieved success globally, earning around $108.2 million worldwide. Notably, this weekend, The Walt Disney Studios claimed both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots domestically with Alien: Romulus and Deadpool & Wolverine. Alien: Romulus, set after the events of 1979’s Alien directed by Ridley Scott, follows a young group of scavengers who encounter the most terrifying creature in the universe. Ridley Scott served as a producer on Romulus and Alvarez stated that “he’s been a great partner at every level.”

The latest movie in the current Alien series, Alien: Romulus, had the second biggest domestic opening and marked the largest debut in director Fede Alvarez’s career. Starring Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, the film also performed well globally, earning an estimated $108.2 million worldwide. This weekend, The Walt Disney Studios secured the top two spots domestically with Alien: Romulus and Deadpool & Wolverine. Taking place after the events of 1979’s Alien, which was directed by Ridley Scott, Alien: Romulus follows a young group of scavengers encountering the most terrifying creature in the universe. Ridley Scott served as a producer on Romulus, and Alvarez expressed his appreciation for Scott’s valuable partnership throughout the project.

The film — which stars Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson — was also a global hit notching an estimated $108.2 million worldwide.

This weekend saw The Walt Disney Studios hold both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots domestically with Alien: Romulus and Deadpool & Wolverine.

Alien: Romulus — which takes place chronologically after 1979’s Alien which was directed by Ridley Scott follows a young group of scavengers who come face-to-face with the most terrifying creature in the universe.

Scott acted as a producer on Romulus, and “he’s been a great partner at every level,” according to Alvarez.

“At the beginning, he was the first one to really pinpoint the things that were going to make this movie pop. And he was totally right,” Alvarez said. “So, he helped me to zero in on the elements that needed all of my attention.”

Alvarez, who co-wrote the film with Rodo Sayagues, stated that the main goal of the movie was to bring Alien back to its roots as a horror film, focusing on simplicity like the original in the franchise. The new film has also received positive reviews, earning a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Alien: Romulus concludes The Walt Disney Company’s successful summer at the box office, with Disney holding the No. 1 title for May, June, and July. The Walt Disney Studios now hold about 42% of the domestic summer box office, having secured the No. 1 spot for 8 out of the 16 weekends. This includes the highest-grossing animated film of all time, Inside Out 2 ($1.626 billion globally), and the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.143 billion globally). Additionally, another film from a franchise previously under the 21st Century Fox umbrella, May’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, earned around $400 million at the global box office.
