Heading off the heels of Avatar 2’s massive success, details about Avatar 3 emerge. February 2, 2023
James Cameron revealed today that he has already shot “Avatar 3” and parts of “Avatar 4,” and “The Way of Water” has performed strong enough that “Avatar 5” is likely to move forward as well. He also revealed that there will be “a big time jump” for “Avatar 4,” which will then lead into “Avatar 5” and its partial setting on Earth.
Producer Jon Landau reveals a good portion of Avatar 4 has already been shot. October 6, 2023
In a recent interview, producer Jon Landau said portions of a fourth “Avatar” film needed to be made in advance for practical reasons. When one has access to a certain location or technology, it certainly makes sense that one should take advantage of it. Rather than wait any further, Landau says the entire first act of “Avatar 4” has been filmed.
“We’ve completed most of the first act of ‘Avatar 4’ and there were logistical reasons why we needed to do that. We’ve designed most of the whole movie for ‘Avatar 4’ but we haven’t actually filmed all of it — just the first act.”
James Cameron reveals how far along filming for Avatar 3 has gone. December 16, 2021
We knew all along that the plan was to film Avatar 2 and 3 at the same time but it appears as if parts of Avatar 4 were also filmed too. In a recent interview, director James Cameron revealed why.
“We mixed the schedules for Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 together, based on the types of scenes and the environments. I said, let’s just treat it like it’s a six-hour miniseries and we’re only going to go to Frankfurt once. We’re going to shoot all the scenes from 2 and 3 at the same time. That was more or less the motif. Actor availability was an issue as well. Anything that had to be done with a specific actor, we did all the scenes for 2 and 3 together — and a little bit of 4. Because once again, I had to shoot the kids out. They’re allowed to age six years in the middle of the story on page 25 of movie 4. So I needed everything before then, and then everything after, we’ll do later.”
Avatar 4 is currently set to come out in 2026.
Avatar 4? Maybe.
Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are planned to follow after the third film’s release. Although the last two sequels have been reportedly greenlit, Cameron stated in a November 26, 2017 interview: “Let’s face it, if Avatar 2 and 3 don’t make enough money, there’s not going to be a 4 and 5”. David Thewlis later confirmed this in February 2018, stating “they’re making 2 and 3, they’re gonna see if people go and see them, and then they’ll make 4 and 5”.[
In January 2019, in face of the proposed acquisition of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are being developed but haven’t been officially greenlit. According to producer Jon Landau in February 2019, Iger may have been misinterpreted. He said that Avatar 4 and 5 “are not only greenlit” but also a third of Avatar 4 has already been filmed.
