About the Exorcist 1 (2023) movie.
The Exorcist project will encompass three films in total and is described as a “continuation,” rather than a remake, of the 1973 iconic original. David Gordon Green will direct. Green, along with Halloween writers Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and Petter Sattler, will pen the screenplay.
The film will be produced by Jason Blum, David Robinson, and James Robinson with Green, McBride, and Couper Samuelson to executive produce. It will be a co-production between Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Production, with Ryan Turek to oversee the project on behalf of Blumhouse.
Leslie Odom Jr. (“Hamilton”) will star as the father of a demonically possessed child, who frantically turns to Chris MacNeil for advice. MacNeil will be played again by Ellen Burstyn in a reprise of her original Oscar-nominated role. Linda Blair, who played Burstyn’s daughter Regan in the original film, will not be returning.

Exorcist is to begin filming in a couple of weeks. October 12, 2022
Director David Gordon Green revealed today that filming for The Exorcist is about to begin.
“We start in a couple of weeks, and we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and dive into the next great franchise. We’ve got an amazing cast coming together and scripts we’re all excited about.”
Universal spent $400 million on the forthcoming “Exorcist” trilogy, produced by Blumhouse, with Ellen Burstyn set to reprise her role as Chris MacNeil, the mother who hired two Catholic priests to perform an exorcism on her demonically possessed 12-year-old (Linda Blair) in the 1973 original movie.
Jason Blum says the Exorcist reboot will present a fresh, new take on the franchise. October 5, 2021
As the Exorcist reboot project approaches, Blumhouse’s Jason Blum elaborated on the approach to new material.
“What I hope to do with ‘The Exorcist’ is the same thing we did with ‘Halloween. ‘Halloween,’ the first movie was great, and the second movie was okay, and the rest of them were not very good. And then we came in and kind of re-jiggered it, and people liked it, so I hope we can do the same thing with ‘The Exorcist.’ Everyone thinks we’re gonna fall on our face, but I think, we have the same filmmaker, the same writer, David Gordon Green and Danny McBride. And I think we’ll reinvent ‘The Exorcist’ so that it’ll feel fresh, new, different, but, you know, related to the first movie, but also really, really scary.”
Blum had previously stated his objective for the Exorcist reboot.
“I want to make a movie that works for both [audiences]. I want to make a movie for people that know and love the first ‘Exorcist’ and are furious that we’re doing this, but somehow drag themselves to the theater. I want them to come out happy. And I want to make a movie that people who’ve never heard of ‘The Exorcist’ really enjoy. I think David did that with ‘Halloween.’ I think he’ll do that with ‘The Exorcist’ also.”

Jason Blum told The Wrap:
“Blumhouse has always experienced incredible partnership from the team at Universal, and I’m grateful to Donna Langley and Jimmy Horowitz for believing in the vision of David’s film and having the foresight to be flexible with distribution, so the team feels top-notch support through the lifeline of the film. They’re committed to theatrical exhibition and will also serving streaming viewers well by bringing an exciting franchise like the Exorcist to Peacock too. I’m grateful to be working with David Robinson and the great team at Morgan Creek on this iconic franchise.”
