Hot Wheels are a die-cast metal toy car first introduced in 1968 by Elliot Handler, cofounder of Mattel, after watching his son playing with Matchbox cars. The cards were designed with hard plastic tires and wire-like axles which let the wheels spin at high speeds. They were introduced alongside a line of racking tracks, bright orange road sections that were pieced together to form an oval track. Two years after their introduction, their staggering success disrupted the entire toy car industry.
