According to The Sun, and a new book, Church of Fear (scheduled to be published in 2013), the Church of Scientology has built a huge underground bunker (called Trementina Base in reference to the nearby community of Trementina) located deep underground in the New Mexico desert. The “alien space cathedral” acts as a vault for Scientology members and their belongings and was built to ensure their survival when a nuclear holocaust wipes out humanity. The site is marked by large symbols etched onto the desert floor, two diamonds surrounded by a pair of overlapping circles, that are only visible from the air. A private airstrip, built to serve the church’s leaders, is within walking distance of the symbol.
The complex is located near Mesa Huerfanita, New Mexico, about two hours south of Sante Fe and three hours north of Roswell. Hidden within the complex’s vaults are titanium caskets that hold gold disks inscribed with the original texts of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. The vault also holds films, recordings, and a number of private “dwellings”. According to the Daily Mail:
“The symbols seen on the desert floor are reportedly there to help guide Scientologists returning to Earth after fleeing the planet to escape a future “Armageddon”.
The base is designed to withstand the blast of a Hydrogen bomb protected by three 5,000 lb stainless steel doors.
For those inclined to go searching for it, the complex is located on the other side of this mesa.
Once you find and travel down the correct dirt road, it will end at this gate.
Or maybe it’s this gate (from the BBC report). Reportedly you will go through more than one gate until you finally reach a guarded gate with security cameras and an intercom system.
Here’s a good aerial view of the route to the underground complex.
Below is a video from CNN’s Anderson Cooper about the unique property.
