Description
Demonstrate the conversion of mechanical energy to electrical energy with this hand crank electric generator science kit.
Electric generators work on the principle of electromagnetic induction. A conductor coil (a copper coil tightly wound onto a metal core) is rotated rapidly between the poles of a magnet. The conductor coil along with its core is known as an armature. The armature is connected to the shaft of a mechanical energy source, such as a hand crank, and rotated. When the coil in the armature rotates, it cuts the magnetic field between the two poles of the magnet. The magnetic field will interfere with the electrons in the conductor to induce a flow of electric current inside it.
This hand-crank electric generator science kit uses a hand-crank integrated with gears and a small DC motor. When cranked, the DC motor operates in reverse and its conductors in the armature cut the magnetic field to induce a flow of current which is used to light up a small light bulb. This clearly demonstrates mechanical energy being converted into electrical energy. The mechanical energy in this case, is provided by you when you crank the gears attached to the electric motor.
This kit is easy to assemble and contains the following parts:
- Project board
- Right-angle rods for the base
- Motor fixture
- DC motor
- Motor fixture
- U-Shape bracket for crank shaft
- Hand crank arm
- F8 LED light
- Iron shafts
- Gears (two large, one small, soft main gear)
- Shaft sleeve
- Shaft Tee
- Press terminal for light
- Screws (4mm, 6mm, 10mm)
- Instructions
Parts are attached to the project board using the provided screws. Final project is durable and can be left assembled for demonstrations or as a curious desk decoration.
