If you’re not Catholic, rosary beads are a bit of an enigma. About the only time you see them is in the horror movies when the priest nervously fingers the beads while focusing on a prayer. But their use goes beyond Catholicism. Other branches of Christianity use them as prayer beads and agnostics use them to help retain focus on mantras, as aids to meditation focus, or as simple fidget toys. And of course, they make good props for various cosplay costumes too.

Rosary beads are also known as The Holy Rosary, Dominican Rosary or simply the Rosary. According to pious tradition, the concept of the Rosary was given to Saint Dominic in an apparition of the Virgin Mary during the year 1214 in the church of Prouille.

How to use Rosary Beads

How to use rosary beads

Catholics use rosary beads to help pray (or “count their prayers”). They call it “praying the rosary”.

To begin, start with the cross at the end of the pendant chain, Hold the cross between two fingers and pray the Apsotles’ Creed

“I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified; died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.”

Slide your finger along the cord to the next, single bead. Pray Our Father.

“Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen.”

Next is a set of three beads. Slide the fingers to the first of the three beads and “pray three Hail Marys”.

“Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”

Repeat this two more times as you slide your fingers from the first in the set to the second and third bead.

Next, slide your fingers along the rope but stop before reaching the final bead on the pendant. With fingers holding the cord, pray the Glory Be.

“Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.”

Next slide your fingers to the last single bead on the pendant. This is the bead closest to the medallion. This step is the hardest for non-Catholics to understand. While holding this bead, “meditate on the mystery and pray the Our Father again.

What you meditate on depends on the day of the week. There are four “mysteries” that are meditated on. Pope Pius V (in office 1566–1572) established a standard 15 Mysteries of the Rosary, based on long-standing custom. This groups the mysteries in three sets: the Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries, and the Glorious Mysteries. In 2002 Pope John Paul II said that it is fitting that a new set of five be added, termed the Luminous Mysteries, bringing the total number of mysteries to 20.

Mondays and Saturdays:

The Joyful Mysteries remind the faithful of Christ’s birth:

  1. The Annunciation (Luke 1:26–38)
  2. The Visitation (Luke 1:39–56)
  3. The Nativity (Luke 2:1–21)
  4. The Presentation (Luke 2:22–38)
  5. The Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41–52)

Tuesdays and Fridays:

The Sorrowful Mysteries recall Jesus’ passion and death:

  1. The Agony of Jesus in the Garden (Matthew 26:36–56)
  2. The Scourging at the Pillar (Matthew 27:26)
  3. The Crowning with Thorns (Matthew 27:27–31)
  4. The Carrying of the Cross (Matthew 27:32)
  5. The Crucifixion (Matthew 27:33–56).

Wednesdays and Sundays:

The Glorious Mysteries focus on the resurrection of Jesus and the glories of heaven:

  1. The Resurrection (John 20:1–29)
  2. The Ascension (Luke 24:36–53)
  3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1–41)
  4. The Assumption of Mary, the Mother of God, into heaven
  5. The Coronation of Mary in heaven.

Thursdays:

Pope John Paul II added The Mysteries of Light, also known as the Luminous Mysteries, in 2002:

  1. The Baptism in the River Jordan (Matthew 3:13–16)
  2. The Wedding Feast at Cana (John 2:1–11)
  3. The Preaching of the coming of the Kingdom of God (Mark 1:14–15)
  4. The Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1–8)
  5. The Institution of the Holy Eucharist (Matthew 26).

Once you’ve completed the meditations/mysteries, you will be at the medallion or clasp. Skip the medallion and grasp the first bead in the set of 10 beads. Most people go to the left but the direction really doesn’t matter. For each of these 10 beads, pray a Hail Mary. On the rope in between, pray a Glory Be.

“Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”

“Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.”

Move to the next set of 10 beads and repeat the above again. Do this 2 more times. Rosaries have four sets of 10 beads, each separated by a single or larger bead.

Once you reach the end (the medallion or clasp), say the Hail Holy Queen prayer.

“Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb Jesus, O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation; grant we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.”

How to use Prayer Beads (Anglican Rosary or Christian Prayer Beads)

Anglican prayer beads differ slightly from Catholic rosary beads. Instead of four sets of 10 beads, prayer beads have four sets of 7 beads. As with Catholic rosary beads, each set is separated by a single or larger bead. Regular rosary beads can be used as prayer beads though – you simply skip the extra three beads.

The process is not as rigid as with rosary prayers. You choose which prayers you would like to say and which beads you would like to say them on. For instance, you can say a different prayer for each bead in the set of 10 or you can say a single prayer ten times before moving to the next set.

How to use Rosary Beads/Prayer Beads for mantras

Using rosary beads as mantra beads works similar to Christian prayer beads. You pick your mantras and decide how you want to say them on each bead. You can say a single mantra ten times, or say ten different mantras. Most commonly, you would pick four mantras and repeat the mantra on each of the ten beads. Then move to the next set and repeat the next mantra ten times and so on. As with prayer, you would find a comfortable place and repeat the mantra while using the beads to focus.

You can repeat Sanskrit Mantras, those sounds like “Aum” or “Om”, Buddist mantras such as the phrase “Om Mani Padme Hum”, or mantras for meditation that include a topic you wish to focus on. Here’s a list of meditation mantras you can get started with:
