Chinese officials have publicly stated that they intend to become the world’s largest producer of nuclear generated electricity by 2020. Within 8 years, they intend to produce 100 gigawatts of power putting them ahead of the United States as the world’s largest producer of nuclear power. By 2050, they intend to move even further ahead producing 400 gigawatts of power – more power produced than exists in the entire world today. According to Business Wire, the growth in nuclear energy in China would come from new third generation power plants that produce electricity more cheaply than coal and gas plants in coastal China.
“What we are looking at in China now is a situation where it is the very early stages of a very, very significant nuclear build program. This is a quiet revolution.”
