The near perfectly preserved woolly rhino was discovered in August 2020 in permafrost deposits by the river Tirekhtyakh in the Republic of Sakha in Arctic Yakutia. It is the best-preserved juvenile woolly rhino ever found in Yakutia.

The ancient rhino has much of its body intact including internal organs, teeth, part of the intestines, fat, tissues, and hair. The cold permafrost kept the animal’s body preserved for thousands of years.

“The young rhino was between three and four years old and lived separately from its mother when it died, most likely by drowning.”

The animal’s thick fur hints the animal died in the summertime.
