Apple announces expanded options for self-service repair (including access to its System Configuration tool).

In general, Apple does not allow customers to repair their own devices and instead requires customers to use Apple-authorized service providers. This policy applies to all of Apple’s products, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other devices. One reason for this policy is that Apple wants to maintain the quality of its products and ensure that they are repaired properly. Another reason for this policy is that Apple wants to protect its intellectual property. Of course, customers have long-complained about the draconian rules. Today their cries have been acknowledged.

Apple has announced that its Self Service Repair feature will now be available for the iPhone 14 line-up and some Mac models, including the 13-inch MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and M2-powered models. Self Service Repair allows individuals with experience repairing electronic devices to access Apple’s repair manuals, genuine parts, and tools that are used at Apple Store locations and authorized service providers.

The System Configuration process for iPhone repairs involving displays, batteries, and cameras has also been made easier. This post-repair software tool ensures that repairs made with genuine Apple parts are completed correctly and that the parts are working properly. The tool is available for free to all Self Service Repair users and participating service providers in Apple repair programs.

Running System Configuration after a repair authenticates genuine Apple parts, updates firmware, and calibrates parts to ensure maximum performance and quality. For repairs involving biometric authentication, such as Touch ID or Face ID, System Configuration links the biometric sensors to the Secure Enclave on the logic board to ensure device security and customer privacy.

Self Service Repair users can now initiate System Configuration by placing their devices into Diagnostics mode and following on-screen prompts. This eliminates the need for users to contact the Self Service Repair support team to run the final step of the repair, but the team will still be available to assist as needed.
