Netflix was founded in 1997 as the world’s first online DVD-rental store. They shifted from a per-rental model to a monthly subscription service in 1999. Massive losses in 2000 nearly bankrupted the company and forced them to propose a sale to Blockbuster who turned them down saying the “dot-com hysteria is overblown”. By 2005, Internet capacity reached a point where they could offer movies as digital downloads, a concept they had long dreamed of.
