Early reviews for Morbius arrive – and they’re especially bad. March 30, 2022

As the social media and review embargo lifted on Wednesday evening for the film, critics took to Twitter to elaborate on what some are calling the “worst Marvel superhero movie in a long, long time.” Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman wrote: “’Morbius’ is a movie in which it’s clear that no one ever sent the script back for a rewrite with the instructions, ‘Please add a script.’ As in: Add spice, add dialogue, add something so that the movie plays like more than a barely colored-in diagram.” With just a 17% Rotten Tomatoes score on opening day, it goes something like this:

There’s little spark in Leto’s performance.

Seattle Times

The studio may have accidentally created the first Shepard film: it goes on for about an hour and 45 minutes, and right up until the second it ends, you keep feeling as if it’s just about to start.

Daily Telegraph

Lacking in style, spirit, scares, and suspense, this would-be thriller is a toothless and tedious chore.

Mashable

Compelling characters are the lifeblood of a good superhero story, so its tragic that a film about two warring vampires in the Marvel universe is utterly bereft of them.

Time Out

Morbius is a perfunctory, sloppy, paint-by-numbers attempt to remind audiences that Sony has the rights to these Spider-Man villains and by golly they’re going to use them.

Nerdist

At one point Morbius warns, I’m getting hungry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m hungry. My good doctor, we don’t like you now! And nothing that occurs before the credits roll changes that.

Den of Geek

Morbius may be a living vampire, but this supervillain origin story is dead on arrival. A rote, lifeless and cynical attempt to expand Sony’s Spidey-Verse.

Total Film

‘Morbius’ really does… sigh suck. Yes, we couldn’t even come up with something more inventive, folks.

Entertainment

This is just a total embarrassment to the legacy of Marvel Comics and goes to prove after Spider-Man: No Way Home that Sony really can’t make a good comic book movie without Disney anymore.

Daily Express

Even though there are flashes of promise, Morbius ends up being a bland and confused origin tale of the type we thought we had left behind.

Digital Spy

Morbius does eventually become a cluttered slugfest, as all things must. But for much of its run it is a stylish, intriguingly toned story of a man trying to thwart mortality.

Vanity Fair

A bland, competent, and safe superhero adventure that seems destined to be forgotten before its end credits finish rolling.

Sony pulls Morbius release from Russian market. March 1, 2022

Sony Pictures is the latest to pull its movies from the release calendar in Russia due to the country’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

“Given the ongoing military action in Ukraine and the resulting uncertainty and humanitarian crisis unfolding in that region, we will be pausing our planned theatrical releases in Russia, including the upcoming release of ‘Morbius.’ Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been impacted and hope this crisis will be resolved quickly.”

Morbius final trailer gives us a lot to talk about. February 28, 2022

The final two-minute trailer for Morbius was released today. Much is a rehash of what we’ve already seen but there were a few new bits worked into the reel. Oh, and the date has been moved back to April 2, 2022, apparently a bid to take advantage of the lull in the Covid pandemic. Remember, the first trailer for Morbius was released more than two years ago. Fans are like, “Just release it already”.

So what did we get? More scenes of Morbius on the ship, better, longer looks at Morbius’ wicked teeth, and a better look at the Horizon building, the company Michael Morbius works for (the very company that created the Anti-Spider virus venom, headed by Peter Parker’s hero, Max Modell). Oh, and much better “bat radar” smears. And what about all those bodies in what looks like the hallway of a train station – did Morbius do that?

New Morbius poster gives up trying to promote a opening date.

A new Morbius poster was released today, and they’ve clearly given up trying to promote the opening date. The newest entry merely states, “coming soon”. Still, we have a good look at Jared Leto looking pretty ominous in his new role. Check it out:

Morbius release date pushed again to 1/28. January 23, 2022

Jared Leto’s Morbius has set a new release date of January 28, 2023 due to the COVID omicron pandemic’s spread throughout the nation. The movie has already been delayed several times.

Morbius release date delayed (again) by three months. January 3, 2021

Sony Pictures has confirmed today that the release date for the Jared Leto vampire film has been pushed back from January 28, 2022 to April 1, 2022. This is the sixth time the Jared Leto film has been delayed from its initial release date of July 10, 2020. No official reason was given for the latest date shift on this origin story movie, though it’s likely due to the spreading omicron variant, and its ability to to prevent larger audiences from coming to movie theaters.

New poster and 3 1/2-minute clip show what happens when you make Morbius angry. December 5, 2021

Sony/Columbia Pictures dropped a crazy new 3+ minute scene from Morbius that shows us what happens when you make Morbius angry – and it ain’t pretty, folks. We’re talking the same PG-13 style of violence seen in Venom with heads bitten off and throats slash and, oh, my. It’s a beautiful action scene that has us excited about the movie!

In the scene, we see Dr. Michael Morbius undergoing the experimental treatment for his rare blood disorder. When his captors enter the sealed room, well, see for yourself in the clip below.

Not content with just a trailer, we got a new poster too (click to enlarge)!

Morbius debuts second official trailer. November 2, 2021

One day after the Morbius featurette was released, we have a new official trailer. In this trailer, further details about Morbius’ origin are revealed and we see something clearly went wrong in his search for a cure to a debilitating disease. We are also introduced to Morbius’ powers as the trailer shows him gaining awareness of his new abilities. All of this playing over the aptly appropriate background music of The Doors’ When You’re Strange. “The line between hero and villain will be broken”. The trailer concludes with an announcement of a Global Fan Art Contest. “Enter for a chance to have your art featured in the upcoming movie marketing campaign for Morbius”. See morbius.talenthuose.com for more details.

So what do we learn? First, pay attention to the intro – “Sony – in association with Marvel Studios”. Sony owns all-things Spider-Man so cooperation between the two studios going forward is a big deal. Second, did you notice “Oscorp” on the building at 1:41? This means Norman Osborn (aka Green Goblin) and Peter Parker’s good friend, Harry Osborn, exist in the Sony/MCU universe. Neither has ever been mentioned in the MCU. And what about the Spider-Man graffiti in the alleyway at 2:10? “Murderer?” Are they referencing the murder of Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home? And of course, what about Michael Keaton’s appearance at 2:13? Keaton played Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Is the Sony Spider-Man Universe collapsing into the MCU? Oh, my head!

The trailer does not disappoint and we have to admit, got us excited about a movie that at first thought, seemed rather “meh”.

Check out the official Morbius trailer below.

Morbius featurette brings new footage while answering the question, “Who is Morbius?” November 1, 2021

Sony released a new featurette for the upcoming Morbius movie. Narrated by Jared Leto, the vignette offers a few cool glimpse of footage from the film while Leto explains who Marvel’s Morbius character is.

Director Daniel Espinosa implies that Venom will make an appearance in Morbius. August 10, 2021

We know Morbius will feature cameos from Michael Keaton (as Adrian Toomes/Vulture) and Jared Leto (as Dr. Michael Morbius). But director Daniel Espinosa indirectly implied that Venom will make an appearance too. Speaking to Moviezine, Espinosa talked about the making of the movie.

“It usually feels strange before the day begins, when you look at the schedule and stand on the set yourself. When you walk around there, the recording looks just like a Swedish production…when you look at the schedule and read names like Michael Keaton, Jared Leto, Tom Hardy, then it feels cool and very exciting.”

Did you notice the mention of Tom Hardy’s name? Hardy’s Eddie Brock/Venom is huge in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC) so this should come as no surprise that he’d make an appearance in Morbius.
