About the Scream 5 (2022 reboot) movie.
The 2022 Scream reboot (aka Scream 5) is written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick and directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
The film will bring back previous “Scream” franchise actors David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Roger L. Jackson, and Marley Shelton. Newcomers to the movie include Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Dylan Minnette, Mikey Madison, Sonia Ben Ammar, and Kyle Gallner. It will be released by Paramount Pictures.
Principle photography wrapped up in November 2020.

While 2022’s Scream is the fifth film in the popular horror franchise, it’s the first Scream film that won’t be directed by Wes Craven, who died in 2015. Though Tyler Gillett and his co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin confirmed the film is a sequel and not a reboot, rather than being called Scream 5, it’s going into full throwback mode and just being released as Scream.
“The film follows the story of a young woman who returns to her old hometown, only to encounter horrific murder cases connected to a notorious masked serial killer.”

First reviews for Scream 5 are gushing with praise for the franchise reboot. “Two thumbs way up!” January 7, 2022
The new #Scream is a BLAST & my favorite since the original. There’s some sharp writing here – a nice balance of well-crafted scares & amusing commentary on modern horror. It also pokes a lot of fun at itself, too, while remaining a bloody whodunnit & a damn good time. I’m a fan!
Erik Davis
I have seen the new #Scream and it’s a winner! Yes it’s bloody, but also feels loaded with love and reverence for the original and the fandom it amassed … and felt like it was talking to me (to a degree).
Perri Nemiroff
As someone who worshiped the original #ScreamMovie (and absolutely adores SCREAM 2), I have to tell you…
I absolutely LOVED the new SCREAM sequel.
It’s directed with such furious energy — it’s both a love letter to the original and entirely fresh.
I’m beyond ecstatic.
Jake Hamilton
The 5th SCREAM film is the closest I’ve felt to the brilliance, excitement & horror of Wes Craven’s 1996 masterpiece. Hands down, the best SCREAM since the original. Beautifully honors the legacy of the first film while bringing a fresh yet brutal new tone to the franchise.
Kevin McCarthy
I loved SCREAM (2022). It pokes fun at itself, ‘elevated horror,’ and has a lot to say about movie fandom. It leans deep into legacy in the right ways and uses the ‘Scream’ family to great, and surprising, effect. New crew is excellent too, especially Jenna Ortega.
Erik Anderson
Fans will have a killer good time with #ScreamMovie Ghostface is brutal and relentless. @TylerGillett
Paul McGuire Grimes
and @BettinelliOlpin bring the suspense, the laughs and an emotional return for Neve, Courteney and David.
#Scream freakin’ slays! It’s a textbook example of how to revive and reinvigorate a franchise and do it in killer style. Brutal genius, it has the razor-sharp smarts of the finest entries in the series with a third act that absolutely nails it. Two thumbs way up!
Simon Thompson
Have finally seen Scream 2022 #Screammovie and it delivers… and then some.
If this franchise means something to you — and it means so damn much to me — you will leave satisfied, moved, and wanting more.
Oh yeah, it’s scary (and funny) as hell.
Joel Meares
What a welcome return to Woodsboro #Scream is! A razor sharp, bloody introspection on the genre and Wes Craven’s legacy. All the feels and one hell of a genre start to 2022. My horror heart is so full.
Meagan Navarro
The new #Scream is the real deal. Such a well written script that keeps you guessing and wades into the treacherous waters of fandom in 2022. ‘Scream’ fans are going to love it.
Steven Wientraub
As someone who has been in love with this franchise for a little over 25 years now, I totally and completely loved
Heather Wixson
@ScreamMovies. Brutal kills, fun mystery & both the Legacy cast & newbies were great. Wes would be proud.
SCREAM (2021) is a fittingly loud, bloody good time at the movies. It takes a knife to the heart of the modern ‘requel’ machine, “elevated horror,” and toxic online fandoms. Seriously, no major film franchise is safe. This is Scream at its best since the first sequel, easily.

Scream producer explains why Scream bears the same name as the original despite not being a remake. October 16, 2021
We would have expected the latest Scream installment to be titled Scream 5. However, it bears the same name as the original despite not being a remake. According to Executive Producer Kevin Williamson, there was a clear strategy behind dropping the “5” from the movie’s title:
“Well, it was always Scream 5 because it’s the fifth one. So I think we just threw that name out, but I don’t think they ever seriously were going to call it a Scream 5. I don’t think anybody wanted to see the number five after something. You’d have to ask them — Paramount or whoever, but I think taking the 5 off and calling it Scream works because it’s brand new. There’s the legacy cast, and how they infuse this new world and there’s this whole new generation and a new cast of characters that are extremely fun. I think it was a great cast. It’s an amazing group of kids and young talent and they’re very, very good. They pop off the screen, and now our Sidneys and our mature characters who enter into it, they’re the adults. It works really really well.”
Yes, the official Scream trailer does indeed contain some misdirects intended to mislead viewers. October 15, 2021
Filmmaker Matt Bettinelli-Olpin was recently asked if the first trailer was misleading to viewers. He responded:
“That is a very safe assumption. This was a hard trailer for marketing to put together, and I think one of the things we’re happy with is that anything that you might think is a spoiler in this, there’s a good chance you’re wrong. There are misdirects within the movie. There are misdirects within the trailer. For us, that’s just the fun of the whole thing to make this a big whodunnit. Spoilers suck, but the fun as fans is to talk about who might be the killer. Then to go through it forensically to try and find out and see if you can win the game, basically.”

At last, we have a Scream 5 trailer – and it has us really excited about next year’s reboot! October 12, 2021
The Scream 5 trailer is thrilling! We see some of our favorite characters return as well as some newcomers and a hint as to the movie’s plot. Don’t expect any reveals though. Co-Director Tyler Gillet reminded us:
“We were really careful to protect the big reveal of the movie. We went as far as to withhold those moments in the script from the actors. We wanted everybody involved, to the degree that we could, to be a part of the whodunit. Obviously, you get to a point in the shoot where you have to let the cat out of the bag, but we went pretty far into prep and into production with a surprising amount of secrecy maintained.”
Melissa Barrera teases Scream. “Ya’ll aint ready.” October 7, 2021
Melissa Barrera says she saw the final cut of Scream 5 and according to a tweet, loved it.
“Saw the final cut of #ScreamMovie. Ya’ll ain’t ready.”
Security around Scream 5 has been notoriously tight, with even the cast given different versions of the script in order to keep each other in the dark about the plot. But now that they’ve seen the final cut, it seems that the truth might have finally been revealed to those who filmed alongside Ghostface.
Why has there been no Scream trailer? August 5, 2021
With Scream 5 about 6 months away, when can we expect a trailer? Director Olpin says crafting a trailer for Scream 6 is an especially difficult task.
“That’s going to be the challenge with the trailer. There’s a lot in this movie that can get spoiled really easily. We’re so curious to see how the marketing department is going to thread the needle. Because it’s a very narrow one.”
Director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin explains how Scream 5 relates to the prior four movies. August 4, 2021
Director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin assures us the new installment will be accessible for newcomers – but watching the prior four installments won’t hurt.
“This isn’t a movie that you need to have seen 27 other movies to understand. But, your experience will be extremely heightened the more knowledge you have of those previous four. We have a ton of Easter eggs in this thing. We have so many little moments, and nods, and things that are big and little, that all tie to the previou four. So there’s a bit of a puzzle aspect to it from knowing the first four. But hopefully if you don’t catch those things, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t take away from your experience.”
