Theories abound after the discovery that ice melts in Antarctica have revealed a series of unusual pyramid-shaped objects. To date, three pyramid-shaped mountains have been found. Two are located about 10 miles inland and a third near the Antarctica coastline.
The origin and age of the structures is not known but many believe the area was once warm enough to be occupied by humans. Dr. Vanessa Bowman of the British Antarctic Survey told reporters:
“Go back 100 million years ago and Antarctica was covered in lush rainforests similar to those that exist in New Zealand today.”
Indeed, in 2009, pollen was discovered in the area and in 2012, scientists discovered 32 species of bacteria in east Antarctica suggesting a cozy temperature as high as 70F degrees.
Most believe of course, the objects are nothing more than rocky mountains that natural erosion formed into a four-sided pyramid. Others, however, point out that pyramid-shaped natural objects are exceedingly rare. Eric Rignot, a professor of Earth system science at the University of California, Irvine, told Live Science
“Pyramid shapes are not impossible — many peaks partially look like pyramids, but they only have one to two faces like that, rarely four.”
The unnamed object, located at 79°58’39.25″S 81°57’32.21″W, is in the southern part of the Ellsworth Mountains in an area called Heritage Range, which is known for its extraordinary fossils, including those of Cambrian-period trilobites from more than 500 million years ago.
