The White House announced today that it will kick off a "National Day of Civic Hacking" on June 1 and 2 (2013) and is inviting those with tech know-how to use their coding skills to improve communities across the country. Participating government agencies will give hackers access to public data along with coding challenges that are community service oriented and targeted for assisting local neighborhoods, cities, and states.

As such, Microsoft has announced that it is phasing out its Expression design tool suite. Expression Design and Expression Web are being dropped entirely while Expression Blend has been updated from version 4 to version 5 and will be rolled into the Visual Studio product line.
Two years and 18 releases later, Google has removed the beta designation from mod_pagespeed, the open source Apache HTTP module that speeds up web pages using filters to enhance pages by re-writing the page resources served. It is already in use at more than 120,000 sites including EdgeHost, GoDaddy and DreamHost hosting providers.
