
At Beijing’s second World Humanoid Robot Games, Chinese humanoid robots have now run the 100-meter dash faster than any human has ever managed. Tiangong Ultra clocked 9.39 seconds in a preliminary heat, with Honor’s Lightning following at 9.47 seconds — both ahead of Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second world record from 2009, a feat that effectively redefines the upper limits of sprinting, at least for machines.
The 2026 Games are being held from August 22 to 26 at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval, nicknamed the “Ice Ribbon,” the same Olympic venue that hosted the inaugural edition. Organizers say 2,056 robots from 666 teams and 16 countries are entered across 51 events and more than 1,300 competition sessions, making this year’s field dramatically larger than 2025. For sprint events, the 100-meter race has been converted fully to autonomous operation, and strict time limits have been tightened to push engineering teams harder, cutting the 100-meter window from three minutes to one.
Tiangong Ultra’s new mark represents a huge leap over last year’s benchmark, when it won the inaugural Games’ 100-meter sprint in roughly 21.50 seconds. Developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, Tiangong Ultra has already built a résumé that includes winning what was billed as the world’s first humanoid robot half marathon at the 2025 event. Lightning, created by smartphone maker Honor, has been positioned as a flagship demo of the company’s robotics and AI stack; in an earlier test event, an Honor humanoid robot reportedly covered the same 100 meters in just 9.32 seconds at a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second, hinting that race-day times may soon fall even further. Some reports note that both race-day sprinters are affiliated with Beijing-based X-Humanoid, underscoring how Chinese tech firms are clustering around shared robotics platforms to accelerate progress.
Sprint records are only part of the story. Honor also fielded a humanoid runner named Flash that completed a half marathon autonomously in around 50 minutes and 26 seconds, a pace that would be competitive in many amateur human races and a striking demonstration of endurance for a bipedal bot. Across the Games, robots are contesting traditional athletic events such as football, martial arts, and middle-distance races, alongside new additions like tug-of-war, weightlifting, and scenario-based challenges focused on industrial assembly, home services, and emergency rescue — a mix that turns the competition into both a spectacle and a field test for real-world applications.
Chinese officials have framed the World Humanoid Robot Games as both a public-facing “robot Olympics” and a strategic showcase for the country’s broader ambitions in advanced manufacturing, AI, and bipedal locomotion. By forcing teams to design robots that can sprint, pivot, and recover from stumbles on real-world tracks rather than controlled lab environments, the Games pressure developers to master fast, dynamic balance and high-torque actuation — the same capabilities needed for warehouse work, disaster response, and household helpers. For companies like Honor, those jaw-dropping sprint times double as marketing for their consumer tech ecosystems, signaling that the hardware and AI powering your phone are also capable of pushing a humanoid body past human world records.
With humanoid sprinters now outrunning the fastest humans on record, the gap between sci-fi fantasies of robot athletes and reality has all but vanished. For fans who grew up on cyborgs and powered exosuits, Beijing’s Ice Ribbon suddenly looks less like a tech demo and more like the pilot episode of a future where human and robotic leagues share the same sports calendar. In practical terms, the World Humanoid Robot Games still operate in a separate lane from human athletics; records set here won’t rewrite official track-and-field books, but they will shape how governments, companies, and standards bodies think about regulating and benchmarking machine performance.
