The ROG Xbox Ally X20, Asus’ translucent, gold-trimmed 20th anniversary handheld, is finally breaking free from its controversial AR glasses bundle and heading to store shelves as a standalone device for $1,299.99. Preorders for the OLED-powered gaming PC are now live at major retailers like Best Buy as well as Asus’ own storefront, with units scheduled to ship on October 15.
As first highlighted by coverage from outlets such as The Verge, Asus initially pitched the Ally X20 as part of a premium “halo” package that married the handheld to matching AR gaming glasses, a combo that pushed the price tag to around $2,499.99 and drew instant backlash from handheld fans who just wanted the console-like PC without wearable extras. The company has now course-corrected, confirming that the same machine once locked behind that luxury bundle will be available solo for roughly half the cost, making it far more competitive against other high-end portables.
Under the hood, the Ally X20 is designed to be a full generational step over last year’s ROG Ally X, even if it shares the same basic Windows 11 foundation and AMD DNA. Asus equips the X20 with an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor paired with 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, giving it more RAM and storage headroom than many rival handheld PCs straight out of the box. Powering all of that is an 80 Wh battery—double what some early handhelds shipped with—aimed at keeping 120 Hz gameplay going longer between charges.
The marquee upgrade lives up front: a 7.4-inch ROG Nebula HDR OLED display running at 1920×1080, 16:9, with a 120 Hz refresh rate and up to 1,400 nits of peak brightness. The panel supports Dolby Vision, FreeSync Premium Pro variable refresh, and carries a VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000 certification, promising inky blacks and punchy HDR that should make everything from indies to big-budget sci-fi epics pop on a handheld screen. Compared to the 7-inch IPS display in the original Ally X, the X20’s larger, brighter OLED panel is a clear signal that Asus is chasing the same “console-quality portable OLED” buzz that has defined recent handheld refreshes.
Asus isn’t just swapping the screen; the ergonomics and controls get a substantial revamp too. The Ally X20 sports Xbox-inspired gamepad styling with ABXY face buttons, a transforming D-pad that can toggle between four-way and eight-way input, and new drift-resistant TMR thumbsticks surrounded by expanded RGB lighting. There are also programmable back buttons, impulse triggers, and an updated chassis with chunkier rear grips, all wrapped in a translucent shell with gold accents to mark ROG’s 20-year milestone. Connectivity is equally modern, with Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, dual USB-C ports (including USB4), a 3.5 mm jack, and a microSD Express slot for expandable storage.
The standalone X20 doesn’t entirely kill the flashy AR bundle; Asus is still planning a high-end package that pairs the handheld with its matching AR glasses for those willing to pay premium pricing. But by decoupling the OLED device from that add-on and landing at $1,300—about $300 more than the original Ally X but far less than the earlier bundle expectations—Asus positions the X20 as a flagship handheld PC that enthusiasts might actually buy rather than simply admire from afar. For players who want an Xbox-flavored portable rig capable of pushing HDR-heavy PC games on a best-in-class OLED, the October launch suddenly looks a lot more tempting than it did when the Ally X20 was locked behind a pair of pricey glasses.
