
SpaceX is taking its Starbase concept to a colossal new scale, unveiling plans for a $100 billion Starship launch complex dubbed Starbase, Louisiana on the state’s Gulf Coast. As first reported by Engadget, company leaders are pitching the project as a spaceport that until now has only existed in science fiction, with ambitions to support thousands of Starship launches annually. Louisiana officials say the investment is the largest capital project in the state’s history, cementing the site as a centerpiece of SpaceX’s long-term expansion.
The new complex will sprawl across roughly 125,000 acres of coastal marshland near Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish, an area west of New Orleans along the Gulf Coast. Located on and around a former Exxon property, the footprint stretches about 18 miles and is more than eight times the size of Manhattan, dwarfing SpaceX’s existing Starbase campus in South Texas. Once fully built out, Starbase Louisiana is expected to feature five launch complexes, each hosting two Starship towers and their own propellant farms, for a total of 10 pads and room to expand to more than a dozen launch towers. “Starbase Louisiana will ultimately have over a dozen launch towers, enabling more than 30 Starship flights per day and making it the biggest launch site on Earth,” Elon Musk wrote on social media.
Construction on the site is slated to begin in 2027, with SpaceX and state officials targeting the first Starship launch from Louisiana as early as 2029. Economic development documents indicate initial operations could come online around 2030, with the campus designed as a self-sustaining company town complete with propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing facilities, deep-water shipping access and an airport, plus residential housing for workers and their families. Local leaders in Vermilion Parish are already touting the deal as a transformational boost for the region, bringing long-term aerospace and high-tech infrastructure to a part of the Gulf Coast better known for fishing and oil.
Strategically, Starbase Louisiana gives SpaceX a major new launch corridor that complements its existing South Texas operations and planned Starship pads in Florida. The coastal location allows Starship to fly over the Gulf of Mexico and onward over Earth’s polar regions, expanding the range of mission profiles beyond what’s possible from Boca Chica alone. A massive, multi-pad site capable of dozens of launches per day is central to Musk’s roadmap for Starship: high-cadence flights to support everything from satellite megaconstellations and NASA’s Artemis lunar program to long-term dreams of Mars colonization and point-to-point travel on Earth.
For space and sci-fi fans, Starbase Louisiana reads like a real-world mash-up of classic orbital launch cities and mega-spaceports from genre fiction. The campus plan—with clustered towers, on-site fuel production, and an embedded community of workers—evokes everything from the industrial sprawl of Heinlein-style lunar hubs to the bustling launch colonies seen in modern anime and video games. SpaceX’s talk of thousands of Starship launches a year and a spaceport larger than any in history pushes the boundary of what a “rocket base” looks like in reality, inching it ever closer to the cinematic visions that have defined geek culture for decades.
That scale also raises big questions. The site sits on fragile coastal marshland in a state already battling erosion, hurricanes and rising seas, and while officials emphasize that environmental reviews and regulatory approvals will be required, the sheer footprint of the project is likely to draw intense scrutiny from conservationists and residents alike. At the same time, Louisiana’s political leadership has clearly decided that betting on a Starship spaceport is worth the risk, banking on SpaceX’s appetite for rapid iteration and mega-projects to anchor a new era of Gulf Coast space industry. If everything goes according to plan, the remote stretches around Pecan Island could become the next pilgrimage site for rocket-watchers, turning quiet marshland into the backdrop for some of the most ambitious launches humanity has ever attempted.
