
Apple is reportedly preparing a dedicated AI server line built around its future M8 Ultra silicon, signaling a rare return to the data center market by 2029. The system would extend the same M‑series Ultra architecture currently powering high‑end Mac desktops into rack-style hardware aimed at heavy machine learning workloads.
According to early reporting, Apple is exploring two configurations: a smaller chassis with two M8 Ultra chips clustered together and a larger model packing four M8 Ultra processors. The company has also evaluated Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion interconnect stack to link the M8 chips, a technology bundle of switches, chiplets, and software designed to keep multiple GPUs or accelerators in sync across a data center fabric. The servers are intended to be sold to AI developers, enterprises, and government customers rather than used solely inside Apple’s own infrastructure, though plans remain fluid and the project could still be canceled or ship without Nvidia networking.
News of the server program lands as Macs with M‑series Ultra chips—particularly the Mac Studio and Mac mini—have become unexpectedly popular among AI researchers and startups looking for dense local compute. Booming sales of these machines for AI workloads appear to have strengthened the business case for a dedicated enterprise offering that reuses Apple’s in‑house silicon instead of relying on external GPU vendors.
If the product reaches market, it would be Apple’s first branded server hardware in roughly two decades, underscoring how unusual it is for the company to chase classic enterprise data center customers. Unlike the discontinued Xserve era of Intel-based rack Macs, the new design would be built around Apple’s own ARM architecture and tuned specifically for AI, fitting alongside its broader push to run many machine learning features on custom silicon rather than generic cloud compute.
The initiative reportedly gained momentum under John Ternus, who supported the project while running hardware engineering and has since stepped into the role of Apple’s chief executive. Ternus joined Apple’s product design organization in 2001, rose to vice president of hardware engineering in 2013, and served as senior vice president overseeing iPhone, iPad, and Mac hardware before becoming CEO in September 2026. That hardware-first résumé makes an aggressive AI server push a logical early move for his tenure, positioning Apple’s silicon team as a central player in the company’s AI strategy.
Apple’s reported interest in NVLink Fusion hints at a pragmatic stance toward Nvidia, blending Apple-designed compute with an established high-speed interconnect at a time when Nvidia dominates AI data center spending. At the same time, a successful M8 Ultra server could give cloud providers and private labs an alternative to traditional x86 CPU plus discrete GPU stacks, tightening Apple’s integration story from iPhones and Macs up to full racks of AI hardware.
For AI developers already building on Mac Studio and Mac mini, a true Apple server could mean smoother scaling from local experiments to on-prem clusters, with consistent performance characteristics and tooling across the stack. With a tentative timeline stretching to 2029 and no final design locked in, the project remains aspirational, but it signals that Apple no longer sees AI as just an on-device feature set and is willing to compete in the same heavy compute arena as Nvidia, AMD, and the hyperscale cloud giants.
