HBO Max and Paramount Plus will fuse into one mega streamer after Skydance merger

Paramount+ is on the clock. As first reported by Polygon, the newly completed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery means HBO Max and Paramount+ are set to be folded into a single, unified streaming service, effectively phasing out Paramount+ as a standalone platform over the next few years.

The streaming shake-up is the direct result of Paramount Skydance Corporation’s $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a deal that creates a new global entertainment giant operating under the Skydance banner. Regulators in the U.S. and abroad spent months picking over the transaction, with the Justice Department approving the takeover in June, a coalition of state attorneys general settling their antitrust challenge in September, and a California judge signing off on the settlement to clear the final hurdle for closing the deal. Paramount Skydance has since announced it has satisfied regulatory conditions in nearly 70 countries, formally completing the Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition and cementing Skydance as Hollywood’s latest mega-conglomerate.

On an investor call back in March, Paramount CEO David Ellison laid out the plan that fans are now seeing come to life: combine the HBO Max and Paramount+ apps into one “stronger platform” instead of running two overlapping services side by side. Ellison told investors that a merged offering built on both companies’ subscriber bases would create a direct-to-consumer business with “a little over 200 million” streaming customers worldwide. Skydance’s official merger materials pitch the combined streamer as a pro-competition move, stressing that unifying Paramount+, HBO Max, and the free, ad-supported Pluto TV service will expand consumer choice while giving creative talent a bigger global stage.

For genre fans, the implications are massive. HBO Max’s prestige-heavy catalog already includes tentpole series like “Game of Thrones,” “House of the Dragon,” “The Sopranos,” “The White Lotus,” and a deep bench of DC and Warner Bros. films. Paramount+ brings its own heavy hitters, from “Yellowstone” and its spin-offs to an entire fleet of “Star Trek” shows, plus CBS network fare and Paramount Pictures’ film slate. A combined Skydance streamer would put all of that under one roof, alongside Discovery’s nonfiction brands and Pluto TV’s FAST channels, creating a single destination for everything from dragons and starships to true-crime docs and reality TV.

Exactly how this fusion will look inside your Roku or PS5 menu is still an open question. Skydance has confirmed that HBO Max and Paramount+ “will unify into a single service over time,” but stopped short of revealing a new brand name, launch date, or pricing tiers for the combined app. Reports indicate HBO chief Casey Bloys will oversee the merged streaming operation, signaling that HBO’s curatorial approach and content standards are likely to shape the new platform’s identity. For now, subscribers to both services should expect a gradual transition rather than a hard cutover, with account migrations, app rebrands, and content reshuffling rolling out in phases as the tech and licensing logistics get hammered out.

Behind the scenes, the move is as much about survival in the streaming wars as it is about convenience for viewers. By merging two mid-sized streamers into one giant, Skydance is trying to stand toe-to-toe with Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon’s Prime Video rather than fighting fragmented battles on multiple fronts. Antitrust scrutiny from state AGs and the Justice Department highlighted fears that consolidation could reduce competition, but regulators ultimately allowed the deal to proceed, noting both the intense pressure from tech-backed rivals and Paramount’s argument that a larger, more efficient platform could actually strengthen competition in the market.

For sci-fi, fantasy, and comics fans, the bottom line is simple: fewer apps, more tentpole universes in one place, and a lot of change coming to your watchlist. As Skydance begins stitching HBO Max and Paramount+ together, expect some familiar shows to move homes, catalog layouts to change, and recommendations to start mixing dragons with starships and Yellowstone ranchers with Gotham vigilantes. The Paramount+ logo may disappear from your home screen, but its genre staples are about to live alongside HBO’s big hitters in what could become one of the densest geek-content libraries on the internet.
