Alexa Tablet 12 Pro vs iPad Pro: Amazon finally goes premium on tablets

Amazon is finally stepping out of the bargain-bin Fire tablet shadow with a new Alexa Tablet lineup built to go toe-to-toe with Apple’s iPad family. Headlining the push is the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, a 12-inch Android slate that explicitly targets the iPad Pro’s creative and productivity crowd for less than half the cost of Apple’s high-end models.

Unlike Amazon’s older Fire tablets, the Alexa series runs full Android with access to the Google Play Store instead of the company’s limited Fire OS and Appstore. Amazon is also baking in an upgraded Alexa+ experience, turning these devices into portable smart displays that can control lights, cameras, and Echo speakers when you are away from your desk. On Apple’s side, the latest iPad Pros lean on iPadOS and a laptop-class M-series processor, positioning them as much as MacBook alternatives as they are premium tablets.

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro carries a 12-inch LCD with a 2,800×1,840 resolution, 280 pixels per inch, 500-nit brightness, and a 120Hz refresh rate, wrapped in a productivity-friendly 3:2 aspect ratio. Apple’s 13-inch iPad Pro counters with a tandem OLED panel at 2,752×2,064 resolution, 264 pixels per inch and the same 120Hz refresh rate, delivering deeper blacks and HDR punch even if it is slightly lower in pixel density. Engadget’s hands-on notes that Amazon’s optional Nanomatte finish on the 12 Pro cuts glare and adds a paper-like texture for stylus work, echoing Apple’s Nano-texture option but at a far lower entry price and on more than just the highest-capacity model. Physically, the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is about 6.5mm thick and roughly 550 grams, a little thicker but slightly lighter than the latest 13-inch iPad Pro.

Under the hood, Amazon is touting a new 4-nanometer 8-core chip that it says delivers up to nine times the graphics performance of its previous tablets, backed by 8GB of RAM on the 128GB model and 16GB on the 256GB configuration. The base Alexa Tablet 12 Pro starts around $500 for the glossy screen and roughly $550 for the Nanomatte version, undercutting Apple’s 11-inch iPad Pro at $1,199 and 13-inch model at $1,499 by a wide margin. Even when you factor in keyboards and pens, Amazon’s bundles remain dramatically cheaper than Apple’s combination of Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro, which can push an iPad Pro well past $1,900. Battery life also tilts in Amazon’s favor on paper, with the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro rated for up to 16 hours of video playback compared with about 10 hours on the iPad Pro.

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro anchors a trio that includes the Alexa Tablet 11 and Alexa Tablet 8, priced around $330 and $230 respectively and aimed at more casual streaming, gaming, browsing and reading. Together, the new tablets mark a clear shift away from Amazon’s ultra-cheap Fire hardware toward a premium, multi-device ecosystem that can stand alongside iPads and Samsung Galaxy Tabs rather than just serving as budget Kindle screens. For geek-culture fans, that means a relatively affordable way to run full Android apps, read comics, watch anime, manage smart homes via Alexa+, and even sketch or mark up RPG PDFs on a matte, paper-like display without paying Apple-level prices. Apple still holds the edge in raw performance, OLED display tech and long-established pro-grade creative workflows, but Amazon’s new hardware finally gives Android-leaning users a serious alternative in the high-end tablet space.
