The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping Is Coming to Meta VR in 2027

The Hunger Games - Sunrise on the Reaping

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is heading somewhere that feels uncomfortably appropriate for Panem: Meta’s upcoming VR Glasses. Lionsgate and Meta will release the film in theatrical 3D on November 20, 2026, followed by a 3D version for Meta’s glasses when they launch in spring 2027. The unexpected VR release has already prompted fans to point out the eerie resemblance between Meta’s pitch and the Capitol’s appetite for immersive spectacle.

Meta describes the partnership as its first collaboration with a Hollywood studio to convert a feature film into 3D for a theatrical release. The company worked with DNEG, an Oscar-winning visual-effects house with extensive stereo-3D experience, while director Francis Lawrence supervised the process. Advance tickets for the 3D theatrical presentation are already available, with the movie opening nationwide on November 20. Meta’s announcement says the same 3D experience will later move to its glasses in spring 2027.

The timing is notable because Sunrise on the Reaping is not a lighthearted return to Panem. Suzanne Collins’ novel and its film adaptation revisit the Second Quarter Quell, the 50th Hunger Games, in which the Capitol doubles the number of tributes sent into the arena. The story centers on a younger Haymitch Abernathy, the future mentor of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, during one of the defining traumas of his life.

That premise makes the VR angle more than a simple format upgrade. The Hunger Games franchise has always used televised violence as a critique of voyeurism, propaganda, and the way audiences can be encouraged to consume suffering as entertainment. Watching Haymitch’s ordeal through a headset could make the arena feel more immediate than a conventional screen, but it also risks turning the franchise’s warning about spectacle into the selling point itself.

For Lionsgate, the deal offers a prominent showcase for both theatrical 3D and Meta’s next hardware push. Trade coverage reports that the glasses are expected to include a 5K display, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos spatial audio, and IMAX Enhanced support, positioning the device as a premium home-cinema platform rather than merely a gaming accessory. The Hollywood Reporter also identifies DNEG as the company handling the completed 3D conversion.

Whether fans embrace the format may depend on how the film balances technological novelty with the story’s deliberately uncomfortable themes. Sunrise on the Reaping arrives in theaters first, giving audiences the traditional communal spectacle; only afterward will viewers be able to isolate themselves inside a headset and experience Panem at a closer distance. That contradiction may be precisely why the announcement feels so on-brand: the Capitol would absolutely call it progress.
