The Elder Scrolls 6 Finally Has a Name, but Bethesda Still Keeps Fans Waiting

The Elder Scrolls VI/6 - Sentinel

The Elder Scrolls 6 is finally more than a numbered promise. Bethesda has confirmed that its next mainline fantasy RPG is officially titled The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, giving fans the first substantial piece of new information about the game in years. The subtitle was unveiled by Todd Howard during a video celebrating Bethesda’s 40th anniversary.

The announcement arrived at the end of a short retrospective tracing Bethesda’s history from its early sports games to the studio’s breakthrough work on The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Howard framed the anniversary as the right moment to answer one question that has followed the project since its reveal: what, exactly, would the next Elder Scrolls game be called? A logo for Sentinel appeared as the video closed.

The name also gives fresh weight to recent speculation about the game’s setting. The Verge connects Sentinel with Hammerfell, the province associated with the desert city of Sentinel and previously explored in The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and The Elder Scrolls Online. That geographic connection has not been presented as a full gameplay reveal, however, so fans should distinguish between confirmed branding and unannounced story details.

Bethesda first announced The Elder Scrolls VI at E3 in 2018 with a brief landscape teaser. The studio’s official announcement described the project as being in pre-production at Bethesda Game Studios, the team behind Skyrim and Fallout 4. Since then, the game has remained largely invisible while Bethesda shipped Fallout 76 and Starfield, leaving the sequel to one of gaming’s most influential open-world RPGs with an unusually long runway before release.

That wait is not ending with this reveal. Bethesda has not announced a release date or release window, and no gameplay footage, platform list, or detailed feature breakdown accompanied the name. PC Gamer’s coverage likewise notes that the anniversary video supplies a title rather than a full presentation of the game.

For now, Sentinel is best understood as a milestone rather than a launch signal. It confirms that Bethesda is ready to put an official identity behind its next Tamriel adventure, while preserving the mystery around its world, systems, characters, and timing. After eight years of silence since the original teaser, even one word represents a meaningful step forward—but fans are still waiting for the chapter that comes after the name.
