Cool science pictures that make you go “huh?”

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words.  In these interesting science pictures, they are worth a single word – “huh?”.  Check out the cool science pictures below.  If they don’t cause you to scratch your head in wonder, they will at least put things in perspective.

How big is the moon?

The surface area of the moon is 37.9 million square kilometers.  How big is that?  Here’s a true-scale image of the United States superimposed over the moon.

How do astronauts eat in space?

Below is a food tray used aboard the Space Shuttle.  Notice the velcro used to hold the food in place on the tray.  The black strips under the silverware are magnets.

Death-defying climbing goats

These death-defying goats (ibexes really) have climbed the nearly vertical surface of this or dam in Northern Italy in order to lick the mineral deposits on the surface.

What the Mona Lisa painting really looked like

The earliest copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, Mona Lisa, (see picture on left) was found in the vaults of a Spanish museum and is believed to have been painted by one of Leonardo da Vinci’s apprentices alongside the master himself.  It was better preserved than the original and gives us insight into what the real Mona Lisa would have looked like back in 1503 when it was painted.

China’s Flower Ocean

Every spring in Luoping, China, this area is transformed into an ocean of canola flowers.

Momma lions are sweet?

A mother lion “trains” her baby lion very similar to the way a human mother trains her children.  In the picture below, it is believed that the mother is “faking” being hurt in order to teach the baby lion how to bite.
