Mattel Creations paid a sweet tribute to the iconic American Divco Milk Truck with their new Matchbox “Tootsie Roll” edition. The Detroit Industrial Vehicle Company first introduced the snub-nosed “Model U” in the late 1930s. The vehicle’s ingenious design included a double-stepped chassis frame, which allowed the driver to stand while operating the truck. The Model U also featured a swing-away pedestal seat for the driver to sit, rear-door access, and an Art Deco hood that added to its visual appeal.
Initially designed for milk delivery, these trucks were used primarily for this purpose starting in 1939. Originally, the milk was kept on ice, but as refrigeration technology improved, the trucks were modified to include this feature. The Divco Milk Truck remained in production until 1986 and has since become an American icon. In fact, the popularity of these vehicles helped put “milkmen” on the map.
Another American icon, Tootsie Rolls have been produced for more than 100 years, satisfying the sweet tooth of kids of all ages. This edition of the 2020 casting features Tootsie Roll graphics and comes in an acrylic case, making it a sweet addition to your collection.
