
Dolby’s logos are everywhere in geek homes—on game consoles, streaming apps, Blu-ray players, and soundbars—yet “Dolby Digital 5.1” and “Dolby Digital Plus” can look like meaningless jargon in an audio settings menu. Engadget recently dug into the differences, and the short version is this: Dolby Digital is the older surround standard, while Dolby Digital Plus is a more flexible, more efficient upgrade designed for modern streaming and advanced setups.
The original Dolby Digital format, also known as AC-3, was built for cinema, broadcast, and home theater at a time when DVDs and 5.1 systems ruled the living room. It supports up to five full-range channels plus a low-frequency effects channel—your classic 5.1 layout—with a maximum bitrate of 640 kbit/s. That was plenty for cable boxes, DVD players, and early surround receivers, which is why Dolby Digital became a de facto baseline for multichannel audio across TV and disc releases.
Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3) is essentially the sequel—an enhanced codec based on Dolby Digital that adds more channels, more bitrate flexibility, and new features. Where Dolby Digital tops out at 5.1, Dolby Digital Plus can carry up to 7.1 discrete channels in typical consumer implementations and is architected to scale to as many as 15.1 channels in future systems. It also massively widens the bitrate range, from 32 kbit/s up to 6.144 Mbit/s, giving content creators more headroom to balance quality against bandwidth. On top of that, DD+ is efficient enough that Dolby cites roughly twice the coding efficiency of legacy Dolby Digital, meaning a DD+ stream can match or beat a DD stream’s quality at lower data rates. Crucially for geeks chasing object-based soundtracks, Dolby Digital Plus can also carry Dolby Atmos metadata in streaming scenarios, letting services deliver height effects without jumping to heavy lossless codecs.
All that extra capability would be meaningless if it broke older gear, so Dolby built Digital Plus to be backward-compatible with existing Dolby Digital receivers and decoders. The codec uses a “core plus extension” design: at its heart is a complete 5.1 Dolby Digital mix, with additional channels and data added in extension layers for devices that understand DD+. That means an older AVR or soundbar can still lock onto the core and play regular Dolby Digital 5.1, even when the source is encoded in Dolby Digital Plus. Modern hardware with HDMI 1.3 or newer typically decodes DD+ natively, so newer TVs, streaming boxes, and home theater receivers can take advantage of the extra channels and features without breaking compatibility with legacy setups.
From a pure technology standpoint, Dolby Digital Plus is “better” because it supports more channels and can deliver the same or higher perceived quality at similar or lower bitrates, thanks to more advanced coding tools. In practice, though, what you hear depends on how the content was mixed and how aggressively a service or broadcaster compresses the audio. A heavily compressed DD+ stream at very low bitrate may not sound dramatically superior to a well-encoded Dolby Digital 5.1 track, while a high-bitrate DD+ mix with 7.1 channels or Atmos metadata can offer a clearly richer, more enveloping soundfield. That’s why two different apps on the same streaming box can show “Dolby Digital Plus” but still sound noticeably different: they’re not all using the format to its full potential.
For everyday geeks wiring up a living room, the practical takeaway is straightforward: if your gear supports Dolby Digital Plus, you’re set for the modern streaming world, and if it only understands Dolby Digital, DD+ sources will usually fall back to regular 5.1. Dolby notes that more than eight billion consumer devices now support Dolby Digital Plus, and major services like Netflix and Amazon’s video platforms routinely deliver content in DD+, often with Atmos on higher-end setups. So when you see “Dolby Digital 5.1” labeled on older discs or broadcast channels, think tried-and-true baseline, and when you see “Dolby Digital Plus” on your streamer or console, think newer, more flexible surround that’s designed to squeeze maximum immersion out of limited bandwidth without abandoning your existing hardware.
