Most viewers remember the big scares in Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House: the Bent-Neck Lady, the Tall Man with his cane, Poppy Hill dancing in the halls. But Mike Flanagan built a second, quieter layer of horror into the show. Flanagan said the house interior was designed specifically so it could hide ghosts, and estimated that each episode contains roughly eight to ten of them standing in plain sight without the camera ever drawing attention to them. The characters never actually notice these figures, which turns them into a ghost hunt for the audience alone.

The Ghosts You Were Meant to See

For completeness, there are of course, featured spirits you are meant to see. For example, William Hill, the former owner who went mad and bricked himself inside a wall, returns as the Tall Man (Bowler Hat Man) who haunts Luke. Poppy Hill, William’s wife who was considered insane in life, is another of the house’s ghosts, as is Hazel Hill. Abigail Dudley appears as young Luke’s friend from the woods. The Bent-Neck Lady, of course, turns out to be Nell herself, and Olivia joins the house’s residents by the end of the season.

There are 35 meant-to-see ghost sightings across eight episodes (with Episode 3 as the undisputed champion). If you spot any the lists missed, you’re in good company; by Flanagan’s own math, there are dozens more still waiting in the shadows.

Below is every hidden ghost that has been publicly catalogued, organized by episode, with timestamps. A few notes before you start hunting. Timestamps can drift a few seconds depending on your device and whether the Netflix intro plays, so rewind a little if you miss one. Many of these figures sit in deep shadow, so turning up your screen brightness helps a lot. And the list almost certainly isn’t complete; Flanagan’s own estimate is higher than what fans have found.

Episode 1: “Steven Sees a Ghost”

33:30	Steven’s bedroom	While Hugh and young Steven hide from whatever is at the door, a figure is already standing inside the room with them. Look to the right side of the frame while someone turns the knob outside.
35:04	Beside the stairs	As Hugh and Steven escape, two figures stand watching next to the staircase. Screen Rant also spotted a third woman briefly on the left side, and noted the man appears to be the same one from the banister shot.
50:39	Kitchen	With Olivia in the kitchen doorway, a figure peers at her from behind a tall cupboard. The face vanishes once she turns to leave.

Episode 2: “Open Casket”

Episode 3: “Touch”

This is the most crowded episode of the season. Bloody Disgusting counted nine ghosts here, more than any other episode on its tally. Bloody Disgusting!

38:23	Dining room	During Theo’s vision of Olivia’s death, the pale-haired dining room ghost from Episode 2 returns in the background.
39:41	Open doorway	As Theo wanders past an open kitchen door while Hugh and Mr. Dudley inspect the trap door, a bald man stares in.
39:52	Behind Olivia	Moments later, a long dark-haired woman skulks by a door frame in the distance as Olivia beckons Theo into the dining room.
50:58	Hallway, by the red lamp	As Hugh runs the twins down the hall on the final night, a figure watches from behind the red lamp on the left.

Episode 4: “The Twin Thing”

No hidden ghosts have been catalogued here. Bloody Disgusting’s tally listed zero for this episode. Given how the episode is shot in long continuous takes, it’s worth a re-watch if you want to find the first one yourself.
