For more than a century, The Laughing Cow has been instantly recognizable: a bright-red cow, a wide grin, and the unmistakable round cheese-box earrings. That is why shoppers may do a double take when they see new packaging featuring a noticeably serious-looking cow.
No, the brand has not permanently abandoned its famous personality. The temporary change is part of a marketing teaser designed to make people pause, scan a QR code, and wonder what happened to the mascot’s smile. The redesigned packages began appearing on September 22, 2026. Along with the changed expression, the packaging includes a “we need to talk” message and a QR code that takes the user to TheNotLaughingCow.com. The brand has held back the full explanation, turning the logo change into a conversation starter and setting up a larger campaign reveal.

The Cow’s Smile Has a Long History
The Laughing Cow, known in France as La Vache qui rit, dates back to 1921, when founder Léon Bel registered the trademark. The iconic red cow was developed in the early 1920s, with illustrator Benjamin Rabier playing a key role in shaping the character. Over the decades, the image has been refreshed many times to suit new packaging styles and markets. But its core ingredients have remained remarkably consistent: the red color, friendly face, earrings made from the brand’s own cheese boxes, and a joyful expression.
There is no indication that The Laughing Cow is permanently changing its name or erasing the famous smiling mascot. The serious expression appears to be a temporary campaign device rather than a full-scale rebrand. Bel Brands chief marketing officer Jamee Pearlstein said in a news release:
“The Laughing Cow has spent more than 100 years reminding us not to take life too seriously, so when she suddenly gets serious, you pay attention. Whatever finally got to her must be worth talking about. We’ll let her explain when she’s ready.”
For now, shoppers who spot the serious cow should treat it as an invitation to follow the campaign. Scanning the QR code on the package is the clearest way to see the brand’s official messaging as more details emerge. The Not Laughing Cow packages are available in more than 4,700 stores across the United States.
