The history of the lowrider culture
The lowrider culture started in the 1940s in Mexican-American communities in California. It was a way for Mexican-American youth to express themselves and their culture through their cars. The cars were modified to have hydraulic systems that allowed them to lower and raise the car, hence the name “lowrider”. The cars were also adorned with unique paint jobs, custom interiors, and chrome accessories. Lowriders became a symbol of Chicano pride and a way to resist assimilation into American culture. Today, lowrider culture has spread across the United States and beyond, with car clubs and events dedicated to showcasing these unique and beautiful cars.
