Michael Walsh, the Eisner Award-winning creator of The Silver Coin, and rising star artist Gustaffo Vargas (Marvel’s Voices X-Men) are teaming up to create a new sci-fi series, Nullhunter. This series is a neon-infused cyberpunk retelling of the Labors of Hercules set in space. It combines ’80s-inspired dystopian storytelling and art, similar to Ronin and Blade Runner, and will debut in October.
In Nullhunter, Clay is a war hero who faces a tragic event after returning home. Seeking justice, he is forced to work for his estranged father’s powerful company, OLYMP0S. His first mission takes him to N3M-3A to track down a stolen shipment of war lions. This quest involves twelve near-impossible labors that will take Clay to the edges of space as he uncovers the true source of evil.
“I’ve always been fascinated by Greco-Roman mythology. As a kid, I spent hours reading mythology books and drawing my versions of Hercules, Zeus, and other gods and monsters. I’ve wanted to create a Hercules comic for a long time, but could never find a unique way to do it,” said Walsh.
Walsh continued: “I first thought of Nullhunter while working on The Silver Coin and planned to draw it myself. When The Silver Coin became an ongoing series, I started looking for an artist for Nullhunter. When I saw Gustaffo’s art, I knew he was perfect for this comic. His Peruvian Cyberpunk series is filled with incredible designs, action sequences, and character work. I’m excited to introduce these classic stories in a new way.”
“When Michael told me his idea about a cyberpunk Hercules in space, I was filled with ideas and couldn’t wait to start,” said Vargas. “I do my best work when inspired and challenged, and that’s what I get from Michael and the team. Nullhunter is my best work, and I think readers will enjoy this visual feast and powerful story.”
Nullhunter #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, October 23.
