After their 2000 attempt flopped, Hollywood is once again attempting a Dungeons & Dragons film. It’s a surprising move given their first attempt made $33.8 million on a $45 million movie. Even a made-for-tv sequel (Wrath of the Dragon God) and a direct-to-video sequel (The Book of Vile Darkness) failed to impress D&D fans. But this time, Hollywood is taking the franchise seriously.
Chris Pine has closed a deal to appear in a Dungeons & Dragons film from writers-directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Spider-Man: Homecoming). The project will be led by Hasbro, eOne, and Paramount. All we know about the plot thus far is that the script has been completed and the movie will be based on the popular fantasy tabletop role-playing game. Oh, and that it will feature “an ensemble cast and take a subversive approach to the game” – whatever that means.
The movie has been long in the making. Rumors about the development of a new Dungeons & Dragons film from Warner Bros. Pictures circulated in 2015. By 2017, the project had moved to Paramount with multiple directors vying for a part before Paramount finally settled on Goldstein and Daley.
